1343 ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥ Ḋʰaavaṫ raakʰæ tʰaak rahaa▫é. The wandering mind is restrained and held in its place. ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥੪॥ Sachaa naam man vasaa▫é. ||4|| The True Name is enshrined in the mind. ||4|| ਬਿਸਮ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਰਹੇ ਪਰਮਾਦੀ ॥ Bisam binoḋ rahé parmaaḋee. The exciting and intoxicating worldly plays come to an end, ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥ Gurmaṫ maani▫aa ék liv laagee. for those who accept the Guru’s Teachings, and become lovingly attuned to the One Lord. ਦੇਖਿ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਆ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਆਗੀ ॥ Ḋékʰ nivaari▫aa jal mėh aagee. Seeing this, the fire in the water is extinguished. ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੫॥ So boojʰæ hovæ vadbʰaagee. ||5|| They alone realize this, who are blessed by great good fortune. ||5|| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥ Saṫgur sévé bʰaram chukaa▫é. Serving the True Guru, doubt is dispelled. ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗੈ ਸਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥ An▫ḋin jaagæ sach liv laa▫é. Those who are lovingly attuned to the True Lord remain awake and aware night and day. ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ Éko jaaṇæ avar na ko▫é. They know the One Lord, and no other. ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸੇਵੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥ Sukʰ▫ḋaaṫa sévé nirmal ho▫é. ||6|| Serving the Giver of peace, they become immaculate. ||6|| ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ Sévaa suraṫ sabaḋ veechaar. Selfless service and intuitive awareness come by reflecting upon the Word of the Shabad. ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥ Jap ṫap sanjam ha▫umæ maar. Chanting, intensive meditation and austere self-discipline come by subduing the ego. ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਜਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥ Jeevan mukaṫ jaa sabaḋ suṇaa▫é. One becomes Jivan-mukta - liberated while still alive, by listening to the Shabad. ਸਚੀ ਰਹਤ ਸਚਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੭॥ Sachee rahaṫ sachaa sukʰ paa▫é. ||7|| Living a truthful way of life, one finds true peace. ||7|| ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਮੇਟਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ Sukʰ▫ḋaaṫa ḋukʰ métaṇhaaraa. The Giver of peace is the Eradicator of pain. ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਸੂਝਸਿ ਬੀਜੀ ਕਾਰਾ ॥ Avar na soojʰas beejee kaaraa. I cannot conceive of serving any other. ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਗੈ ਰਾਖਿਆ ॥ Ṫan man ḋʰan har aagæ raakʰi▫aa. I place my body, mind and wealth in offering before Him. ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ॥੮॥੨॥ Naanak kahæ mahaa ras chaakʰi▫aa. ||8||2|| Says Nanak, I have tasted the supreme, sublime Essence of the Lord. ||8||2|| ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ Parbʰaaṫee mėhlaa 1. Prabhaatee, First Mehl: ਨਿਵਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਭੁਅੰਗਮ ਭਾਠੀ ਰੇਚਕ ਪੂਰਕ ਕੁੰਭ ਕਰੈ ॥ Nivlee karam bʰu▫angam bʰaatʰee réchak poorak kumbʰ karæ. You may perform exercises of inner purification, and fire up the furnace of the Kundalini, inhaling and exhaling and holding the breath. ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਬੂਡਿ ਮਰੈ ॥ Bin saṫgur kichʰ sojʰee naahee bʰarmé bʰoolaa bood maræ. Without the True Guru, you will not understand; deluded by doubt, you shall drown and die. ਅੰਧਾ ਭਰਿਆ ਭਰਿ ਭਰਿ ਧੋਵੈ ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਲਹੈ ॥ Anḋʰaa bʰari▫aa bʰar bʰar ḋʰovæ anṫar kee mal kaḋé na lahæ. The spiritually blind are filled with filth and pollution; they may wash, but the filth within shall never depart. ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਫੋਕਟ ਸਭਿ ਕਰਮਾ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਜੀਗਰੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲੈ ॥੧॥ Naam binaa fokat sabʰ karmaa ji▫o baajeegar bʰaram bʰulæ. ||1|| Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, all their actions are useless, like the magician who deceives through illusions. ||1|| ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਸੋਈ ॥ Kʰat karam naam niranjan so▫ee. The merits of the six religious rituals are obtained through the Immaculate Naam. ਤੂ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਮੋਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ Ṫoo guṇ saagar avguṇ mohee. ||1|| rahaa▫o. You, O Lord, are the Ocean of virtue; I am so unworthy. ||1||Pause|| ਮਾਇਆ ਧੰਧਾ ਧਾਵਣੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਕਾਰ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥ Maa▫i▫aa ḋʰanḋʰaa ḋʰaavṇee ḋurmaṫ kaar bikaar. Running around chasing the entanglements of Maya is an evil-minded act of corruption. ਮੂਰਖੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਇਦਾ ਬੂਝਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕਾਰ ॥ Moorakʰ aap gaṇaa▫iḋaa boojʰ na sakæ kaar. The fool makes a show of his self-conceit; he does not know how to behave. ਮਨਸਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੋਲ ਖੁਆਰ ॥ Mansaa maa▫i▫aa mohṇee manmukʰ bol kʰu▫aar. The self-willed Manmukh is enticed by his desires for Maya; his words are useless and empty. ਮਜਨੁ ਝੂਠਾ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਕਾ ਫੋਕਟ ਚਾਰ ਸੀਂਗਾਰ ॥੨॥ Majan jʰootʰaa chandaal kaa fokat chaar seeⁿgaar. ||2|| The ritual cleansings of the sinner are fraudulent; his rituals and decorations are useless and empty. ||2|| ਝੂਠੀ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਕਰਣੀ ਬਾਦਿ ਬਿਬਾਦੁ ॥ Jʰootʰee man kee maṫ hæ karṇee baaḋ bibaaḋ. False is the wisdom of the mind; its actions inspire useless disputes. ਝੂਠੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਅਹੰਕਰਣੁ ਹੈ ਖਸਮ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਾਦੁ ॥ Jʰootʰé vich ahankaraṇ hæ kʰasam na paavæ saaḋ. The false are filled with egotism; they do not obtain the sublime taste of their Lord and Master. ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਹੋਰੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਫਿਕਾ ਆਵੈ ਸਾਦੁ ॥ Bin naavæ hor kamaavaṇaa fikaa aavæ saaḋ. Without the Name, whatever else they do is tasteless and insipid. ਦੁਸਟੀ ਸਭਾ ਵਿਗੁਚੀਐ ਬਿਖੁ ਵਾਤੀ ਜੀਵਣ ਬਾਦਿ ॥੩॥ Ḋustee sabʰaa viguchee▫æ bikʰ vaaṫee jeevaṇ baaḋ. ||3|| Associating with their enemies, they are plundered and ruined. Their speech is poison, and their lives are useless. ||3|| ਏ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਮਰਹੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥ É bʰaram bʰoolé marahu na ko▫ee. Do not be deluded by doubt; do not invite your own death. ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥ Saṫgur sév saḋaa sukʰ ho▫ee. Serve the True Guru, and you shall be at peace forever. ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥ Bin saṫgur mukaṫ kinæ na paa▫ee. Without the True Guru, no one is liberated. ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਂਹਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੪॥ Aavahi jaaⁿhi marėh mar jaa▫ee. ||4|| They come and go in reincarnation; they die, only to be reborn and die again. ||4|| ਏਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਹੈ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਧਾਤੁ ॥ Éhu sareer hæ ṫaræ guṇ ḋʰaaṫ. This body wanders, caught in the three dispositions. ਇਸ ਨੋ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਸੋਗ ਸੰਤਾਪੁ ॥ Is no vi▫aapæ sog sanṫaap. It is afflicted by sorrow and suffering. ਸੋ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਾਈ ਨ ਬਾਪੁ ॥ So sévhu jis maa▫ee na baap. So, serve the One who has no mother or father. ਵਿਚਹੁ ਚੂਕੈ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਅਰੁ ਆਪੁ ॥੫॥ vichahu chookæ ṫisnaa ar aap. ||5|| Desire and selfishness shall depart from within. ||5|| ਜਹ ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਤਹ ਸੋਈ ॥ Jah jah ḋékʰaa ṫah ṫah so▫ee. Wherever I look, I see Him. ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ Bin saṫgur bʰété mukaṫ na ho▫ee. Without meeting the True Guru, no one is liberated. ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਚੁ ਏਹ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ Hirḋæ sach éh karṇee saar. Enshrine the True One in your heart; this is the most excellent action. ਹੋਰੁ ਸਭੁ ਪਾਖੰਡੁ ਪੂਜ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥੬॥ Hor sabʰ pakʰand pooj kʰu▫aar. ||6|| All other hypocritical actions and devotions bring only ruin. ||6|| ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਚੂਕੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥ Ḋubiḋʰaa chookæ ṫaaⁿ sabaḋ pachʰaaṇ. When one is rid of duality, then he realizes the Word of the Shabad. ਘਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੁ ॥ Gʰar baahar éko kar jaaṇ. Inside and out, he knows the One Lord. ਏਹਾ ਮਤਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ Éhaa maṫ sabaḋ hæ saar. This is the most Excellent Wisdom of the Shabad. ਵਿਚਿ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਾਥੈ ਪਵੈ ਛਾਰੁ ॥੭॥ vich ḋubiḋʰaa maaṫʰæ pavæ chʰaar. ||7|| Ashes fall on the heads of those who are in duality. ||7|| ਕਰਣੀ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ Karṇee keeraṫ gurmaṫ saar. To praise the Lord through the Guru’s Teachings is the most excellent action. ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ Sanṫ sabʰaa guṇ gi▫aan beechaar. In the Society of the Saints, contemplate the Glories of God and His spiritual wisdom. ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਣੁ ॥ Man maaré jeevaṫ mar jaaṇ. Whoever subdues his mind, knows the state of being dead while still alive. ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥੮॥੩॥ Naanak naḋree naḋar pachʰaaṇ. ||8||3|| O Nanak! By His Grace, the Gracious Lord is realized. ||8||3|| |
