ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥

Likʰi▫aa hovæ naankaa karṫaa karé so ho▫é. ||1||

Whatever is predestined, happens, O Nanak; whatever the Creator does, comes to pass. ||1||

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Mėhlaa 1.

First Mehl:

ਰੰਨਾ ਹੋਈਆ ਬੋਧੀਆ ਪੁਰਸ ਹੋਏ ਸਈਆਦ ॥

Rannaa ho▫ee▫aa boḋʰee▫aa puras ho▫é sa▫ee▫aaḋ.

Women have become advisors, and men have become hunters.

ਸੀਲੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸੁਚ ਭੰਨੀ ਖਾਣਾ ਖਾਜੁ ਅਹਾਜੁ ॥

Seel sanjam such bʰannee kʰaaṇaa kʰaaj ahaaj.

Humility, self-control and purity have run away; people eat the uneatable, forbidden food.

ਸਰਮੁ ਗਇਆ ਘਰਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਪਤਿ ਉਠਿ ਚਲੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

Saram ga▫i▫aa gʰar aapṇæ paṫ utʰ chalee naal.

Modesty has left her home, and honor has gone away with her.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਅਉਰੁ ਨ ਸਚਾ ਭਾਲਿ ॥੨॥

Naanak sachaa ék hæ a▫or na sachaa bʰaal. ||2||

O Nanak! There is only One True Lord; do not bother to search for any other as true. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pa▫oṛee.

Pauree:

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭਸਮ ਲੇਪਨ ਕਰੇ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗੁਬਾਰੀ ॥

Baahar bʰasam lépan karé anṫar gubaaree.

You smear your outer body with ashes, but within, you are filled with darkness.

ਖਿੰਥਾ ਝੋਲੀ ਬਹੁ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੇ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥

Kʰinṫʰaa jʰolee baho bʰékʰ karé ḋurmaṫ ahaⁿkaaree.

You wear the patched coat and all the right clothes and robes, but you are still egotistical and proud.

ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਊਚਰੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਸਾਰੀ ॥

Saahib sabaḋ na oochræ maa▫i▫aa moh pasaaree.

You do not chant the Shabad, the Word of Your Lord and Master; you are attached to the expanse of Maya.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲਾਲਚੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਭਰਮੈ ਗਾਵਾਰੀ ॥

Anṫar laalach bʰaram hæ bʰarmæ gaavaaree.

Within, you are filled with greed and doubt; you wander around like a fool.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਜੂਐ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੧੪॥

Naanak naam na chéṫ▫ee joo▫æ baajee haaree. ||14||

Says Nanak, you never even think of the Naam; you have lost the game of life in the gamble. ||14||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Salok mėhlaa 1.

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਲਖ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲਖ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਕਿਆ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਉ ॥

Lakʰ si▫o pareeṫ hovæ lakʰ jeevaṇ ki▫aa kʰusee▫aa ki▫aa chaa▫o.

You may be in love with tens of thousands, and live for thousands of years; but what good are these pleasures and occupations?

ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਵਿਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਏਕ ਘੜੀ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

vichʰuṛi▫aa vis ho▫é vichʰoṛaa ék gʰaṛee mėh jaa▫é.

And when you must separate from them, that separation is like poison, but they will be gone in an instant.

ਜੇ ਸਉ ਵਰ੍ਹਿਆ ਮਿਠਾ ਖਾਜੈ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਕਉੜਾ ਖਾਇ ॥

Jé sa▫o varĥi▫aa mitʰaa kʰaajæ bʰee fir ka▫uṛaa kʰaa▫é.

You may eat sweets for a hundred years, but eventually, you will have to eat the bitter as well.

ਮਿਠਾ ਖਾਧਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕਉੜਤਣੁ ਧਾਇ ਜਾਇ ॥

Mitʰaa kʰaaḋʰaa chiṫ na aavæ ka▫uṛ▫ṫaṇ ḋʰaa▫é jaa▫é.

Then, you will not remember eating the sweets; bitterness will permeate you.

ਮਿਠਾ ਕਉੜਾ ਦੋਵੈ ਰੋਗ ॥

Mitʰaa ka▫uṛaa ḋovæ rog.

The sweet and the bitter are both diseases.

ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਤਿ ਵਿਗੁਤੇ ਭੋਗ ॥

Naanak anṫ viguṫé bʰog.

O Nanak! Eating them, you will come to ruin in the end.

ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਝਖਣਾ ਝਗੜਾ ਝਾਖ ॥

Jʰakʰ jʰakʰ jʰakʰ▫ṇaa jʰagṛaa jʰaakʰ.

It is useless to worry and struggle to death.

ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਝਖਹਿ ਤਿਨੑ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੧॥

Jʰakʰ jʰakʰ jaahi jʰakʰėh ṫinĥ paas. ||1||

Entangled in worries and struggles, people exhaust themselves. ||1||

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Mėhlaa 1.

First Mehl:

ਕਾਪੜੁ ਕਾਠੁ ਰੰਗਾਇਆ ਰਾਂਗਿ ॥

Kaapaṛ kaatʰ rangaa▫i▫aa raaⁿg.

They have fine clothes and furniture of various colors.

ਘਰ ਗਚ ਕੀਤੇ ਬਾਗੇ ਬਾਗ ॥

Gʰar gach keeṫé baagé baag.

Their houses are painted beautifully white.

ਸਾਦ ਸਹਜ ਕਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਖੇਲਾਇਆ ॥

Saaḋ sahj kar man kʰélaa▫i▫aa.

In pleasure and poise, they play their mind games.

ਤੈ ਸਹ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਕਹਾਇਆ ॥

Ṫæ sah paashu kahaṇ kahaa▫i▫aa.

When they approach You, O Lord, they shall be spoken to.

ਮਿਠਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਕਉੜਾ ਖਾਇਆ ॥

Mitʰaa kar kæ ka▫uṛaa kʰaa▫i▫aa.

They think it is sweet, so they eat the bitter.

ਤਿਨਿ ਕਉੜੈ ਤਨਿ ਰੋਗੁ ਜਮਾਇਆ ॥

Ṫin ka▫uṛæ ṫan rog jamaa▫i▫aa.

The bitter disease grows in the body.

ਜੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਿਠਾ ਪੇੜੈ ਪਾਇ ॥

Jé fir mitʰaa péṛæ paa▫é.

If, later on, they receive the sweet,

ਤਉ ਕਉੜਤਣੁ ਚੂਕਸਿ ਮਾਇ ॥

Ṫa▫o ka▫uṛ▫ṫaṇ chookas maa▫é.

then their bitterness shall be gone, O mother.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥

Naanak gurmukʰ paavæ so▫é.

O Nanak! The Gurmukh is blessed to receive

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥

Jis no paraapaṫ likʰi▫aa ho▫é. ||2||

what he is predestined to receive. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pa▫oṛee.

Pauree:

ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਕਪਟੁ ਹੈ ਬਾਹਰੁ ਧੋਵਾਇਆ ॥

Jin kæ hirḋæ mæl kapat hæ baahar ḋʰovaa▫i▫aa.

Those whose hearts are filled with the filth of deception, may wash themselves on the outside.

ਕੂੜੁ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਪਰਗਟੀ ਆਇਆ ॥

Kooṛ kapat kamaavḋé kooṛ pargatee aa▫i▫aa.

They practice falsehood and deception, and their falsehood is revealed.

ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਨਿਕਲੈ ਨਹ ਛਪੈ ਛਪਾਇਆ ॥

Anḋar ho▫é so niklæ nah chʰapæ chʰapaa▫i▫aa.

That which is within them, comes out; it cannot be concealed by concealment.

ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਗਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

Kooṛæ laalach lagi▫aa fir joonee paa▫i▫aa.

Attached to falsehood and greed, the mortal is consigned to reincarnation over and over again.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਖਾਵਣਾ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੫॥

Naanak jo beejæ so kʰaavṇaa karṫæ likʰ paa▫i▫aa. ||15||

O Nanak! Whatever the mortal plants, he must eat. The Creator Lord has written our destiny. ||15||

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੨ ॥

Salok mėhlaa 2.

Shalok, Second Mehl:

ਕਥਾ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਬੇਦੀ ਆਣੀ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

Kaṫʰaa kahaaṇee béḋeeⁿ aaṇee paap punn beechaar.

The Vedas bring forth stories and legends, and thoughts of vice and virtue.

ਦੇ ਦੇ ਲੈਣਾ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਦੇਣਾ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥

Ḋé ḋé læṇaa læ læ ḋéṇaa narak surag avṫaar.

What is given, they receive, and what is received, they give. They are reincarnated in heaven and hell.

ਉਤਮ ਮਧਿਮ ਜਾਤੀਂ ਜਿਨਸੀ ਭਰਮਿ ਭਵੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

Uṫam maḋʰim jaaṫeeⁿ jinsee bʰaram bʰavæ sansaar.

High and low, social class and status - the world wanders lost in superstition.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ਤਤੁ ਵਖਾਣੀ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਈ ॥

Amriṫ baṇee ṫaṫ vakʰaaṇee gi▫aan ḋʰi▫aan vich aa▫ee.

The Ambrosial Word of Gurbani proclaims the essence of reality. Spiritual wisdom and meditation are contained within it.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਖੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤੀ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਕਰਮਿ ਧਿਆਈ ॥

Gurmukʰ aakʰee gurmukʰ jaaṫee surṫeeⁿ karam ḋʰi▫aa▫ee.

The Gurmukhs chant it, and the Gurmukhs realize it. Intuitively aware, they meditate on it.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਾਜਿ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਖੈ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ॥

Hukam saaj hukmæ vich rakʰæ hukmæ anḋar vékʰæ.

By the Hukam of His Command, He formed the Universe, and in His Hukam, He keeps it. By His Hukam, He keeps it under His Gaze.

ਨਾਨਕ ਅਗਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੁਟੈ ਤਾਂ ਕੋ ਲਿਖੀਐ ਲੇਖੈ ॥੧॥

Naanak agahu ha▫umæ ṫutæ ṫaaⁿ ko likee▫æ lékʰæ. ||1||

O Nanak! If the mortal shatters his ego before he departs, as it is preordained, then he is approved. ||1||

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Mėhlaa 1.

First Mehl:

ਬੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੇ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਪਾਪੁ ਸੁਰਗ ਨਰਕ ਕਾ ਬੀਉ ॥

Béḋ pukaaré punn paap surag narak kaa bee▫o.

The Vedas proclaim that vice and virtue are the seeds of heaven and hell.

ਜੋ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਉਗਵੈ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੀਉ ॥

Jo beejæ so ugvæ kʰaaⁿḋaa jaaṇæ jee▫o.

Whatever is planted, shall grow. The soul eats the fruits of its actions, and understands.

ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸਲਾਹੇ ਵਡਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਚੋ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

Gi▫aan salaahé vadaa kar sacho sachaa naa▫o.

Whoever praises spiritual wisdom as great, becomes truthful in the True Name.

ਸਚੁ ਬੀਜੈ ਸਚੁ ਉਗਵੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਈਐ ਥਾਉ ॥

Sach beejæ sach ugvæ ḋargėh paa▫ee▫æ ṫʰaa▫o.

When Truth is planted, Truth grows. In the Court of the Lord, you shall find your place of honor.
