ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਮੈਲੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਵਜਲਿ ਫੇਰਾ ॥੩॥

Ahaⁿ▫buḋʰ ḋurmaṫ hæ mælee bin gur bʰavjal féraa. ||3||

They are proud and arrogant, evil-minded and filthy; without the Guru, they are reincarnated into the terrifying world-ocean. ||3||

ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸਭਿ ਸੰਜਮ ਤਟਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

Hom jag jap ṫap sabʰ sanjam ṫat ṫiraṫʰ nahee paa▫i▫aa.

Through burnt offerings, charitable feasts, ritualistic chants, penance, all sorts of austere self-discipline and pilgrimages to sacred shrines and rivers, they do not find God.

ਮਿਟਿਆ ਆਪੁ ਪਏ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਗਤੁ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੪॥

Miti▫aa aap pa▫é sarṇaa▫ee gurmukʰ Naanak jagaṫ ṫaraa▫i▫aa. ||4||1||14||

Self-conceit is only erased when one seeks the Lord’s Sanctuary and becomes Gurmukh; O Nanak! He crosses over the world-ocean. ||4||1||14||

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Bʰæro mėhlaa 5.

Bhairao, Fifth Mehl:

ਬਨ ਮਹਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਤ੍ਰਿਣ ਮਹਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਉਦਾਸਾਏ ॥

Ban mėh pékʰi▫o ṫariṇ mėh pékʰi▫o garihi pékʰi▫o uḋaasaa▫é.

I have seen Him in the woods, and I have seen Him in the fields. I have seen Him in the household, and in renunciation.

ਦੰਡਧਾਰ ਜਟਧਾਰੈ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਵਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਤੀਰਥਾਏ ॥੧॥

Ḋandḋʰaar jatḋʰaaræ pékʰi▫o varaṫ ném ṫeerṫʰaa▫é. ||1||

I have seen Him as a Yogi carrying His staff, as a Yogi with matted hair, fasting, making vows, and visiting sacred shrines of pilgrimage. ||1||

ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਮਨ ਮਾਏਂ ॥

Saṫsang pékʰi▫o man maa▫éⁿ.

I have seen Him in the Society of the Saints, and within my own mind.

ਊਭ ਪਇਆਲ ਸਰਬ ਮਹਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਰਸਿ ਮੰਗਲ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Oobʰ pa▫i▫aal sarab mėh pooran ras mangal guṇ gaa▫é. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

In the sky, in the nether regions of the underworld, and in everything, He is pervading and permeating. With love and joy, I sing His Glorious Praises. ||1||Pause||

ਜੋਗ ਭੇਖ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੈ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਜਤਿ ਜੰਗਮ ਕਾਪੜਾਏ ॥

Jog bʰékʰ sanni▫aasæ pékʰi▫o jaṫ jangam kaapṛaa▫é.

I have seen Him among the Yogis, the Sannyasis, the celibates, the wandering hermits and the wearers of patched coats.

ਤਪੀ ਤਪੀਸੁਰ ਮੁਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਨਟ ਨਾਟਿਕ ਨਿਰਤਾਏ ॥੨॥

Ṫapee ṫapeesur mun mėh pékʰi▫o nat naatik nirṫaa▫é. ||2||

I have seen Him among the men of severe self-discipline, the silent sages, the actors, dramas and dances. ||2||

ਚਹੁ ਮਹਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਖਟ ਮਹਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਦਸ ਅਸਟੀ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾਏ ॥

Chahu mėh pékʰi▫o kʰat mėh pékʰi▫o ḋas astee simmriṫaa▫é.

I have seen Him in the four Vedas, I have seen Him in the six Shastras, in the eighteen Puranas and the Smritis as well.

ਸਭ ਮਿਲਿ ਏਕੋ ਏਕੁ ਵਖਾਨਹਿ ਤਉ ਕਿਸ ਤੇ ਕਹਉ ਦੁਰਾਏ ॥੩॥

Sabʰ mil éko ék vakʰaanėh ṫa▫o kis ṫé kaha▫o ḋuraa▫é. ||3||

All together, they declare that there is only the One Lord. So, tell me, from whom is He hidden? ||3||

ਅਗਹ ਅਗਹ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨਹ ਕੀਮ ਕੀਮ ਕੀਮਾਏ ॥

Agah agah bé▫anṫ su▫aamee nah keem keem keemaa▫é.

Unfathomable and Inaccessible, He is our Infinite Lord and Master; His Value is beyond valuation.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਜਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਪਰਗਟੀਆਏ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੫॥

Jan Naanak ṫin kæ bal bal jaa▫ee▫æ jih gʰat pargatee▫aa▫é. ||4||2||15||

Servant Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to those, within whose heart He is revealed. ||4||2||15||

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Bʰæro mėhlaa 5.

Bhairao, Fifth Mehl:

ਨਿਕਟਿ ਬੁਝੈ ਸੋ ਬੁਰਾ ਕਿਉ ਕਰੈ ॥

Nikat bujʰæ so buraa ki▫o karæ.

How can anyone do evil, if he realizes that the Lord is near?

ਬਿਖੁ ਸੰਚੈ ਨਿਤ ਡਰਤਾ ਫਿਰੈ ॥

Bikʰ sanchæ niṫ darṫaa firæ.

One who gathers corruption, constantly feels fear.

ਹੈ ਨਿਕਟੇ ਅਰੁ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

Hæ nikté ar bʰéḋ na paa▫i▫aa.

He is near, but this mystery is not understood.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਭ ਮੋਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

Bin saṫgur sabʰ mohee maa▫i▫aa. ||1||

Without the True Guru, all are enticed by Maya. ||1||

ਨੇੜੈ ਨੇੜੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ॥

Néṛæ néṛæ sabʰ ko kahæ.

Everyone says that He is near, near at hand.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭੇਦੁ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਲਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Gurmukʰ bʰéḋ virlaa ko lahæ. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

But rare is that person, who, as Gurmukh, understands this mystery. ||1||Pause||

ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਦੇਖੈ ਪਰ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

Nikat na ḋékʰæ par garihi jaa▫é.

The mortal does not see the Lord near at hand; instead, he goes to the homes of others.

ਦਰਬੁ ਹਿਰੈ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਖਾਇ ॥

Ḋarab hiræ miṫʰi▫aa kar kʰaa▫é.

He steals their wealth and lives in falsehood.

ਪਈ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥

Pa▫ee tʰag▫uree har sang na jaani▫aa.

Under the influence of the drug of illusion, he does not know that the Lord is with him.

ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਿਆ ॥੨॥

Baajʰ guroo hæ bʰaram bʰulaani▫aa. ||2||

Without the Guru, he is confused and deluded by doubt. ||2||

ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਬੋਲੈ ਕੂੜੁ ॥

Nikat na jaanæ bolæ kooṛ.

Not understanding that the Lord is near, he tells lies.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਮੂਠਾ ਹੈ ਮੂੜੁ ॥

Maa▫i▫aa mohi mootʰaa hæ mooṛ.

In love and attachment to Maya, the fool is plundered.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਦਿਸੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

Anṫar vasaṫ disanṫar jaa▫é.

That which he seeks is within his own self, but he looks for it outside.

ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥੩॥

Baajʰ guroo hæ bʰaram bʰulaa▫é. ||3||

Without the Guru, he is confused and deluded by doubt. ||3||

ਜਿਸੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਕਰਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲਿਲਾਟ ॥

Jis masṫak karam likʰi▫aa lilaat.

One whose good karma is recorded on his forehead

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਖੁਲੑੇ ਕਪਾਟ ॥

Saṫgur sévé kʰulĥé kapaat.

serves the True Guru; thus, the hard and heavy shutters of his mind are opened wide.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਨਿਕਟੇ ਸੋਇ ॥

Anṫar baahar nikté so▫é.

Within his own being and beyond, he sees the Lord near at hand.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੪॥੩॥੧੬॥

Jan Naanak aavæ na jaavæ ko▫é. ||4||3||16||

O servant Nanak! He does not come and go in reincarnation. ||4||3||16||

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਉਨੁ ਮਾਰੈ ॥

Jis ṫoo raakʰahi ṫis ka▫un maaræ.

Who can kill that person whom You protect, O Lord?

ਸਭ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥

Sabʰ ṫujʰ hee anṫar sagal sansaaræ.

All beings, and the entire universe, is within You.

ਕੋਟਿ ਉਪਾਵ ਚਿਤਵਤ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥

Kot upaav chiṫvaṫ hæ paraaṇee.

The mortal thinks up millions of plans,

ਸੋ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਿ ਕਰੈ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ॥੧॥

So hovæ jė karæ choj vidaaṇee. ||1||

but that alone happens, which the Lord of wondrous plays does. ||1||

ਰਾਖਹੁ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

Raakʰo raakʰo kirpaa ḋʰaar.

Save me, save me, O Lord; shower me with Your Mercy.

ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਦਰਵਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ṫéree saraṇ ṫéræ ḋarvaar. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

I seek Your Sanctuary, and Your Court. ||1||Pause||

ਜਿਨਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥

Jin sévi▫aa nirbʰa▫o sukʰ▫ḋaaṫa.

Whoever serves the Fearless Lord, the Giver of Peace,

ਤਿਨਿ ਭਉ ਦੂਰਿ ਕੀਆ ਏਕੁ ਪਰਾਤਾ ॥

Ṫin bʰa▫o ḋoor kee▫aa ék paraaṫaa.

is rid of all his fears; he knows the One Lord.

ਜੋ ਤੂ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

Jo ṫoo karahi so▫ee fun ho▫é.

Whatever You do, that alone comes to pass in the end.

ਮਾਰੈ ਨ ਰਾਖੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥

Maaræ na raakʰæ ḋoojaa ko▫é. ||2||

There is no other who can kill or protect us. ||2||

ਕਿਆ ਤੂ ਸੋਚਹਿ ਮਾਣਸ ਬਾਣਿ ॥

Ki▫aa ṫoo sochėh maaṇas baaṇ.

What do you think, with your human understanding?

ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥

Anṫarjaamee purakʰ sujaaṇ.

The All-knowing Lord is the Searcher of Hearts.

ਏਕ ਟੇਕ ਏਕੋ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥

Ék ték éko aaḋʰaar.

The One and only Lord is my Support and Protection.

ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੩॥

Sabʰ kichʰ jaaṇæ sirjaṇhaar. ||3||

The Creator Lord knows everything. ||3||

ਜਿਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥

Jis oopar naḋar karé karṫaar.

That person who is blessed by the Creator’s Glance of Grace-
