ਏਹੁ ਸਮੁੰਦੁ ਅਥਾਹੁ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਭਰਿਆ ॥

Ėhu samunḋ aṫʱaahu mahaa bikʱ bʱari▫aa.

This ocean is vast and unfathomable; it is overflowing with the worst poison.

ਰਹੈ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੇ ਊਪਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੬॥

Rahæ aṫeeṫ gurmaṫ lé oopar har nirbʱa▫o kæ gʱar paa▫i▫aa. ||6||

One who receives the Guru’s Teachings, and remains aloof and detached, obtains a place in the home of the Fearless Lord. ||6||

ਝੂਠੀ ਜਗ ਹਿਤ ਕੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥

Jʱootʱee jag hiṫ kee chaṫuraa▫ee.

False is the cleverness of loving attachment to the world.

ਬਿਲਮ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥

Bilam na laagæ aavæ jaa▫ee.

In no time at all, it comes and goes.

ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਚਲਹਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਖਪਾਇਆ ॥੭॥

Naam visaar chalėh abʱimaanee upjæ binas kʱapaa▫i▫aa. ||7||

Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the proud egotistical people depart; in creation and destruction they are wasted away. ||7||

ਉਪਜਹਿ ਬਿਨਸਹਿ ਬੰਧਨ ਬੰਧੇ ॥

Upjahi binsahi banḋʱan banḋʱé.

In creation and destruction, they are bound in bondage.

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਗਲਿ ਫੰਧੇ ॥

Ha▫umæ maa▫i▫aa ké gal fanḋʱé.

The noose of egotism and Maya is around their necks.

ਜਿਸੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੋ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬੰਧਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥੮॥

Jis raam naam naahee maṫ gurmaṫ so jam pur banḋʱ chalaa▫i▫aa. ||8||

Whoever does not accept the Guru’s Teachings, and does not dwell upon the Lord’s Name, is bound and bagged, and dragged into the City of Death. ||8||

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੋਖ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਿਉ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

Gur bin mokʱ mukaṫ ki▫o paa▫ee▫æ.

Without the Guru, how can anyone be emancipated or liberated?

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਿਉ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥

Bin gur raam naam ki▫o ḋʱi▫aa▫ee▫æ.

Without the Guru, how can anyone meditate on the Lord’s Name?

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਤਰਹੁ ਭਵ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਭਏ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੯॥

Gurmaṫ lého ṫarahu bʱav ḋuṫar mukaṫ bʱa▫é sukʱ paa▫i▫aa. ||9||

Accepting the Guru’s Teachings, cross over the arduous, terrifying world-ocean; you shall be emancipated, and find peace. ||9||

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨਿ ਗੋਵਰਧਨ ਧਾਰੇ ॥

Gurmaṫ krisan govarḋʱan ḋʱaaré.

Through the Guru’s Teachings, Krishna lifted up the mountain of Govardhan.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਇਰਿ ਪਾਹਣ ਤਾਰੇ ॥

Gurmaṫ saa▫ir paahaṇ ṫaaré.

Through the Guru’s Teachings, Rama floated stones across the ocean.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਿ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥੧੦॥

Gurmaṫ lého param paḋ paa▫ee▫æ Naanak gur bʱaram chukaa▫i▫aa. ||10||

Accepting the Guru’s Teachings, the supreme-status is obtained; O Nanak! The Guru eradicates doubt. ||10||

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਤਰਹੁ ਸਚੁ ਤਾਰੀ ॥

Gurmaṫ lého ṫarahu sach ṫaaree.

Accepting the Guru’s Teachings, cross over to the other side through Truth.

ਆਤਮ ਚੀਨਹੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥

Āṫam cheenahu riḋæ muraaree.

O soul, remember the Lord within your heart.

ਜਮ ਕੇ ਫਾਹੇ ਕਾਟਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਅਕੁਲ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੧॥

Jam ké faahé kaatėh har jap akul niranjan paa▫i▫aa. ||11||

The noose of death is cut away, meditating on the Lord; you shall obtain the Immaculate Lord, who has no ancestry. ||11||

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪੰਚ ਸਖੇ ਗੁਰ ਭਾਈ ॥

Gurmaṫ panch sakʱé gur bʱaa▫ee.

Through the Guru’s Teachings, the Holy become one’s friends and Siblings of Destiny.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥

Gurmaṫ agan nivaar samaa▫ee.

Through the Guru’s Teachings, the inner fire is subdued and extinguished.

ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਰਿਦ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਆ ॥੧੨॥

Man mukʱ naam japahu jagjeevan riḋ anṫar alakʱ lakʱaa▫i▫aa. ||12||

Chant the Naam with your mind and mouth; know the unknowable Lord, the Life of the World, deep within the nucleus of your heart. ||12||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਤੀਜੈ ॥

Gurmukʱ boojʱæ sabaḋ paṫeejæ.

The Gurmukh understands, and is pleased with the Word of the Shabad.

ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਿਸ ਕੀ ਕੀਜੈ ॥

Usṫaṫ ninḋaa kis kee keejæ.

Who does he praise or slander?

ਚੀਨਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਜਗਦੀਸਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਗੰਨਾਥੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੧੩॥

Cheenahu aap japahu jagḋeesar har jagannaaṫʱ man bʱaa▫i▫aa. ||13||

Know yourself, and meditate on the Lord of the Universe; let your mind be pleased with the Lord, the Master of the Universe. ||13||

ਜੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡਿ ਖੰਡਿ ਸੋ ਜਾਣਹੁ ॥

Jo barahmand kʱand so jaaṇhu.

Know the One who pervades all the realms of the universe.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣਹੁ ॥

Gurmukʱ boojʱhu sabaḋ pachʱaaṇhu.

As Gurmukh, understand and realize the Shabad.

ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਭੋਗੇ ਭੋਗਣਹਾਰਾ ਰਹੈ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥੧੪॥

Gʱat gʱat bʱogé bʱogaṇhaaraa rahæ aṫeeṫ sabaa▫i▫aa. ||14||

The Enjoyer enjoys each and every heart, and yet He remains detached from all. ||14||

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਬੋਲਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਸੂਚਾ ॥

Gurmaṫ bolhu har jas soochaa.

Through the Guru’s Teachings, chant the Pure Praises of the Lord.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਆਖੀ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਊਚਾ ॥

Gurmaṫ aakʱee ḋékʱhu oochaa.

Through the Guru’s Teachings, behold the lofty Lord with your eyes.

ਸ੍ਰਵਣੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਣੈ ਹਰਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰੰਗਾਇਆ ॥੧੫॥੩॥੨੦॥

Sarvaṇee naam suṇæ har baṇee Naanak har rang rangaa▫i▫aa. ||15||3||20||

Whoever listens to the Lord’s Name, and the Word of His Bani, O Nanak! Is imbued with the color of the Lord’s Love. ||15||3||20||

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Maaroo mėhlaa 1.

Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਪਰਹਰੁ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ॥

Kaam kroḋʱ par▫har par ninḋaa.

Leave behind sexual desire, anger and the slander of others.

ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਤਜਿ ਹੋਹੁ ਨਿਚਿੰਦਾ ॥

Lab lobʱ ṫaj hohu nichinḋaa.

Renounce greed and possessiveness, and become carefree.

ਭ੍ਰਮ ਕਾ ਸੰਗਲੁ ਤੋੜਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

Bʱaram kaa sangal ṫoṛ niraalaa har anṫar har ras paa▫i▫aa. ||1||

Break the chains of doubt, and remain unattached; you shall find the Lord, and the Lord’s sublime essence, deep within yourself.||1||

ਨਿਸਿ ਦਾਮਨਿ ਜਿਉ ਚਮਕਿ ਚੰਦਾਇਣੁ ਦੇਖੈ ॥

Nis ḋaaman ji▫o chamak chanḋaa▫iṇ ḋékʱæ.

As one sees the flash of lightning in the night,

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਪੇਖੈ ॥

Ahinis joṫ niranṫar pékʱæ.

see the Divine Light deep within your nucleus, day and night.

ਆਨੰਦ ਰੂਪੁ ਅਨੂਪੁ ਸਰੂਪਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਦੇਖਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

Ānanḋ roop anoop saroopaa gur pooræ ḋékʱaa▫i▫aa. ||2||

The Lord, the embodiment of bliss, incomparably beautiful, reveals the Perfect Guru. ||2||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਤਾਰੇ ॥

Saṫgur milhu aapé parabʱ ṫaaré.

So, meet with the True Guru, and God Himself will save you.

ਸਸਿ ਘਰਿ ਸੂਰੁ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਗੈਣਾਰੇ ॥

Sas gʱar soor ḋeepak gæṇaaré.

He placed the lamps of the sun and the moon in the home of the sky.

ਦੇਖਿ ਅਦਿਸਟੁ ਰਹਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਸਭੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

Ḏékʱ aḋisat rahhu liv laagee sabʱ ṫaribʱavaṇ barahm sabaa▫i▫aa. ||3||

See the invisible Lord, and remain absorbed in loving devotion. God is all throughout the three worlds.||3||

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਏ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭਉ ਜਾਏ ॥

Amriṫ ras paa▫é ṫarisnaa bʱa▫o jaa▫é.

Obtaining the sublime ambrosial essence, desire and fear are dispelled.

ਅਨਭਉ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥

Anbʱa▫o paḋ paavæ aap gavaa▫é.

The state of inspired illumination is obtained, and self-conceit is eradicated.

ਊਚੀ ਪਦਵੀ ਊਚੋ ਊਚਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥

Ūchee paḋvee oocho oochaa nirmal sabaḋ kamaa▫i▫aa. ||4||

The lofty and exalted state, the highest of the high is obtained, practicing the immaculate Word of the Shabad. ||4||

ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

Aḋrist agochar naam apaaraa.

The Naam, the Name of the invisible and unfathomable Lord, is infinite.

ਅਤਿ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥

Aṫ ras meetʱaa naam pi▫aaraa.

The sublime essence of the Beloved Naam is utterly sweet.
