ਅਦਲੁ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥

Aḋal karé gur gi▫aan samaanaa.

He administers justice, and is absorbed in the spiritual wisdom of the Guru.

ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਲੈ ਗਰਦਨਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਲੋਭੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥੬॥

Kaam kroḋʱ læ garḋan maaré ha▫umæ lobʱ chukaa▫i▫aa. ||6||

He seizes sexual desire and anger by their necks, and kills them; He eradicates egotism and greed. ||6||

ਸਚੈ ਥਾਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਾ ॥

Sachæ ṫʱaan vasæ nirankaaraa.

In the True Place, the Formless Lord abides.

ਆਪਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥

Āp pachʱaaṇæ sabaḋ veechaaraa.

Whoever understands his own self, contemplates the Word of the Shabad.

ਸਚੈ ਮਹਲਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥੭॥

Sachæ mahal nivaas niranṫar aavaṇ jaaṇ chukaa▫i▫aa. ||7||

He comes to abide deep within the True Mansion of His Presence, and his comings and goings are ended. ||7||

ਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਚਲੈ ਨ ਪਉਣੁ ਉਡਾਵੈ ॥

Naa man chalæ na pa▫uṇ udaavæ.

His mind does not waver, and he is not buffeted by the winds of desire.

ਜੋਗੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਨਾਹਦੁ ਵਾਵੈ ॥

Jogee sabaḋ anaahaḋ vaavæ.

Such a Yogi vibrates the unstruck sound current of the Shabad.

ਪੰਚ ਸਬਦ ਝੁਣਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪੇ ਵਾਇ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥੮॥

Panch sabaḋ jʱuṇkaar niraalam parabʱ aapé vaa▫é suṇaa▫i▫aa. ||8||

God Himself plays the pure music of the Panch Shabad, the five primal sounds to hear. ||8||

ਭਉ ਬੈਰਾਗਾ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਤਾ ॥

Bʱa▫o bæraagaa sahj samaaṫaa.

In the Fear of God, in detachment, one intuitively merges into the Lord.

ਹਉਮੈ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਅਨਹਦਿ ਰਾਤਾ ॥

Ha▫umæ ṫi▫aagee anhaḋ raaṫaa.

Renouncing egotism, he is imbued with the unstruck sound current.

ਅੰਜਨੁ ਸਾਰਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੯॥

Anjan saar niranjan jaaṇæ sarab niranjan raa▫i▫aa. ||9||

With the ointment of enlightenment, the Immaculate Lord is known; the Immaculate Lord King is pervading everywhere. ||9||

ਦੁਖ ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ॥

Ḏukʱ bʱæ bʱanjan parabʱ abʱinaasee.

God is eternal and imperishable; He is the Destroyer of pain and fear.

ਰੋਗ ਕਟੇ ਕਾਟੀ ਜਮ ਫਾਸੀ ॥

Rog katé kaatee jam faasee.

He cures the disease, and cuts away the noose of death.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋ ਭਉ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੦॥

Naanak har parabʱ so bʱa▫o bʱanjan gur mili▫æ har parabʱ paa▫i▫aa. ||10||

O Nanak! The Lord God is the Destroyer of fear; meeting the Guru, the Lord God is found. ||10||

ਕਾਲੈ ਕਵਲੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

Kaalæ kaval niranjan jaaṇæ.

One who knows the Immaculate Lord chews up death.

ਬੂਝੈ ਕਰਮੁ ਸੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥

Boojʱæ karam so sabaḋ pachʱaaṇæ.

One who understands karma, realizes the Word of the Shabad.

ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਚੋਜੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥੧੧॥

Āpé jaaṇæ aap pachʱaaṇæ sabʱ ṫis kaa choj sabaa▫i▫aa. ||11||

He Himself knows, and He Himself realizes. This whole world is all His play. ||11||

ਆਪੇ ਸਾਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥

Āpé saahu aapé vaṇjaaraa.

He Himself is the Banker, and He Himself is the Merchant.

ਆਪੇ ਪਰਖੇ ਪਰਖਣਹਾਰਾ ॥

Āpé parkʱé parkʱaṇhaaraa.

The Appraiser Himself appraises.

ਆਪੇ ਕਸਿ ਕਸਵਟੀ ਲਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੨॥

Āpé kas kasvatee laa▫é aapé keemaṫ paa▫i▫aa. ||12||

He Himself tests upon His Touchstone, and He Himself estimates the value. ||12||

ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲਿ ਦਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਧਾਰੀ ॥

Āp ḋa▫i▫aal ḋa▫i▫aa parabʱ ḋʱaaree.

God Himself, the Merciful Lord, grants His Grace.

ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਬਨਵਾਰੀ ॥

Gʱat gʱat rav rahi▫aa banvaaree.

The Gardener pervades and permeates each and every heart.

ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਵਸੈ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੁਰਖੈ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੧੩॥

Purakʱ aṫeeṫ vasæ nihkéval gur purkʱæ purakʱ milaa▫i▫aa. ||13||

The pure, primal, detached Lord abides within all. The Guru, the Lord Incarnate, leads us to meet the Lord God. ||13||

ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦਾਨਾ ਬੀਨਾ ਗਰਬੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥

Parabʱ ḋaanaa beenaa garab gavaa▫é.

God is wise and all-knowing; He purges men of their pride.

ਦੂਜਾ ਮੇਟੈ ਏਕੁ ਦਿਖਾਏ ॥

Ḏoojaa métæ ék ḋikʱaa▫é.

Eradicating duality, the One Lord reveals Himself.

ਆਸਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਜੋਨੀ ਅਕੁਲ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਗਾਇਆ ॥੧੪॥

Āsaa maahi niraalam jonee akul niranjan gaa▫i▫aa. ||14||

Such a being remains unattached amidst hope, singing the Praise of the Immaculate Lord, who has no ancestry. ||14||

ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਟਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

Ha▫umæ mét sabaḋ sukʱ ho▫ee.

Eradicating egotism, he obtains the peace of the Shabad.

ਆਪੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸੋਈ ॥

Āp veechaaré gi▫aanee so▫ee.

He alone is spiritually wise, who contemplates his own self.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਲਾਹਾ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਚੁ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੫॥੨॥੧੯॥

Naanak har jas har guṇ laahaa saṫsangaṫ sach fal paa▫i▫aa. ||15||2||19||

O Nanak! Singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, the true profit is obtained; in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, the fruit of Truth is obtained. ||15||2||19||

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Maaroo mėhlaa 1.

Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਸਚੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਸਚੈ ਘਰਿ ਰਹਣਾ ॥

Sach kahhu sachæ gʱar rahṇaa.

Speak the Truth, and remain in the home of Truth.

ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰਹੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਜਗੁ ਤਰਣਾ ॥

Jeevaṫ marahu bʱavjal jag ṫarṇaa.

Remain dead while still alive, and cross over the terrifying world-ocean.

ਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਬੇੜੀ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

Gur bohiṫʱ gur béṛee ṫulhaa man har jap paar langʱaa▫i▫aa. ||1||

The Guru is the boat, the ship, the raft; meditating on the Lord in your mind, you shall be carried across to the other side. ||1||

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਲੋਭ ਬਿਨਾਸਨੁ ॥

Ha▫umæ mamṫaa lobʱ binaasan.

Eliminating egotism, possessiveness and greed,

ਨਉ ਦਰ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਦਸਵੈ ਆਸਨੁ ॥

Na▫o ḋar mukṫé ḋasvæ aasan.

one is liberated from the nine gates, and obtains a place in the Tenth Gate.

ਊਪਰਿ ਪਰੈ ਪਰੈ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

Ūpar paræ paræ aprampar jin aapé aap upaa▫i▫aa. ||2||

Lofty and high, the farthest of the far and infinite, He created Himself. ||2||

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੇਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਤਰੀਐ ॥

Gurmaṫ lévhu har liv ṫaree▫æ.

Receiving the Guru’s Teachings, and lovingly attuned to the Lord, one crosses over.

ਅਕਲੁ ਗਾਇ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਕਿਆ ਡਰੀਐ ॥

Akal gaa▫é jam ṫé ki▫aa daree▫æ.

Singing the Praises of the absolute Lord, why should anyone be afraid of death?

ਜਤ ਜਤ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਤ ਤਤ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੁਤੀਆ ਗਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

Jaṫ jaṫ ḋékʱ▫a▫u ṫaṫ ṫaṫ ṫum hee avar na ḋuṫee▫aa gaa▫i▫aa. ||3||

Wherever I look, I see only You; I do not sing of any other at all. ||3||

ਸਚੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਸਰਣਾ ॥

Sach har naam sach hæ sarṇaa.

True is the Lord’s Name, and True is His Sanctuary.

ਸਚੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਜਿਤੈ ਲਗਿ ਤਰਣਾ ॥

Sach gur sabaḋ jiṫæ lag ṫarṇaa.

True is the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, grasping it, one is carried across.

ਅਕਥੁ ਕਥੈ ਦੇਖੈ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਗਰਭਿ ਨ ਜੋਨੀ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੪॥

Akaṫʱ kaṫʱæ ḋékʱæ aprampar fun garabʱ na jonee jaa▫i▫aa. ||4||

Speaking the Unspoken, one sees the Infinite Lord, and then, he does not have to enter the womb of reincarnation again. ||4||

ਸਚ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

Sach bin saṫ sanṫokʱ na paavæ.

Without the Truth, no one finds sincerity or contentment.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ॥

Bin gur mukaṫ na aavæ jaavæ.

Without the Guru, no one is liberated; coming and going in reincarnation continue.

ਮੂਲ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੫॥

Mool manṫar har naam rasaa▫iṇ kaho Naanak pooraa paa▫i▫aa. ||5||

Chanting the Mool Mantra, and the Name of the Lord, the source of nectar, says Nanak, I have found the Perfect Lord. ||5||

ਸਚ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਜਾਇ ਨ ਤਰਿਆ ॥

Sach bin bʱavjal jaa▫é na ṫari▫aa.

Without the Truth, the terrifying world-ocean cannot be crossed.
