ਰਾਗੁ ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਅਸਟਪਦੀਆ ਘਰੁ ੩

Raag aasaa mėhlaa 1 asatpaḋee▫aa gʰar 3

Raag Aasaa, First Mehl, Ashtapadees, Third House:

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Ik▫oaⁿkaar saṫgur parsaaḋ.

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਜਿਨ ਸਿਰਿ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਪਟੀਆ ਮਾਂਗੀ ਪਾਇ ਸੰਧੂਰੁ ॥

Jin sir sohan patee▫aa maaⁿgee paa▫é sanḋʰoor.

Those heads adorned with braided hair, with their parts painted with vermillion -

ਸੇ ਸਿਰ ਕਾਤੀ ਮੁੰਨੀਅਨੑਿ ਗਲ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਵੈ ਧੂੜਿ ॥

Sé sir kaaṫee munnee▫aniĥ gal vich aavæ ḋʰooṛ.

those heads were shaved with scissors, and their throats were choked with dust.

ਮਹਲਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹੋਦੀਆ ਹੁਣਿ ਬਹਣਿ ਨ ਮਿਲਨੑਿ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥੧॥

Mėhlaa anḋar hoḋee▫aa huṇ bahaṇ na milniĥ haḋoor. ||1||

They lived in palatial mansions, but now, they cannot even sit near the palaces. ||1||

ਆਦੇਸੁ ਬਾਬਾ ਆਦੇਸੁ ॥

Aaḋés baabaa aaḋés.

Hail to You, O Father Lord, Hail to You!

ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਵੇਸ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Aaḋ purakʰ ṫéraa anṫ na paa▫i▫aa kar kar ḋékʰėh vés. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

O Primal Lord. Your limits are not known; You create, and create, and behold the scenes. ||1||Pause||

ਜਦਹੁ ਸੀਆ ਵੀਆਹੀਆ ਲਾੜੇ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਪਾਸਿ ॥

Jaḋahu see▫aa vee▫aahee▫aa laaṛé sohan paas.

When they were married, their husbands looked so handsome beside them.

ਹੀਡੋਲੀ ਚੜਿ ਆਈਆ ਦੰਦ ਖੰਡ ਕੀਤੇ ਰਾਸਿ ॥

Heedolee chaṛ aa▫ee▫aa ḋanḋ kʰand keeṫé raas.

They came in palanquins, decorated with ivory;

ਉਪਰਹੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਾਰੀਐ ਝਲੇ ਝਿਮਕਨਿ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੨॥

Uprahu paaṇee vaaree▫æ jʰalé jʰimkan paas. ||2||

water was sprinkled over their heads, and glittering fans were waved above them. ||2||

ਇਕੁ ਲਖੁ ਲਹਨੑਿ ਬਹਿਠੀਆ ਲਖੁ ਲਹਨੑਿ ਖੜੀਆ ॥

Ik lakʰ lėhniĥ bėhtʰee▫aa lakʰ lėhniĥ kʰaṛee▫aa.

They were given hundreds of thousands of coins when they sat, and hundreds of thousands of coins when they stood.

ਗਰੀ ਛੁਹਾਰੇ ਖਾਂਦੀਆ ਮਾਣਨੑਿ ਸੇਜੜੀਆ ॥

Garee chʰuhaaré kʰaaⁿḋee▫aa maaṇniĥ séjṛee▫aa.

They ate coconuts and dates, and rested comfortably upon their beds.

ਤਿਨੑ ਗਲਿ ਸਿਲਕਾ ਪਾਈਆ ਤੁਟਨੑਿ ਮੋਤਸਰੀਆ ॥੩॥

Ṫinĥ gal silkaa paa▫ee▫aa ṫutniĥ moṫsaree▫aa. ||3||

But ropes were put around their necks, and their strings of pearls were broken. ||3||

ਧਨੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਵੈਰੀ ਹੋਏ ਜਿਨੑੀ ਰਖੇ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਇ ॥

Ḋʰan joban ḋu▫é væree ho▫é jinĥee rakʰé rang laa▫é.

Their wealth and youthful beauty, which gave them so much pleasure, have now become their enemies.

ਦੂਤਾ ਨੋ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ ਲੈ ਚਲੇ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਇ ॥

Ḋooṫaa no furmaa▫i▫aa læ chalé paṫ gavaa▫é.

The order was given to the soldiers, who dishonored them, and carried them away.

ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਜੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੪॥

Jé ṫis bʰaavæ ḋé vadi▫aa▫ee jé bʰaavæ ḋé▫é sajaa▫é. ||4||

If it is pleasing to God’s Will, He bestows greatness; if is pleases His Will, He bestows punishment. ||4||

ਅਗੋ ਦੇ ਜੇ ਚੇਤੀਐ ਤਾਂ ਕਾਇਤੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥

Ago ḋé jé chéṫee▫æ ṫaaⁿ kaa▫iṫ milæ sajaa▫é.

If someone focuses on the Lord beforehand, then why should he be punished?

ਸਾਹਾਂ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਗਵਾਈਆ ਰੰਗਿ ਤਮਾਸੈ ਚਾਇ ॥

Saahaaⁿ suraṫ gavaa▫ee▫aa rang ṫamaasæ chaa▫é.

The kings had lost their higher consciousness, reveling in pleasure and sensuality.

ਬਾਬਰਵਾਣੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਗਈ ਕੁਇਰੁ ਨ ਰੋਟੀ ਖਾਇ ॥੫॥

Baabarvaaṇee fir ga▫ee ku▫ir na rotee kʰaa▫é. ||5||

Since Baabar’s rule has been proclaimed, even the princes have no food to eat. ||5||

ਇਕਨਾ ਵਖਤ ਖੁਆਈਅਹਿ ਇਕਨੑਾ ਪੂਜਾ ਜਾਇ ॥

Iknaa vakʰaṫ kʰu▫aa▫ee▫ah iknĥaa poojaa jaa▫é.

The Muslims have lost their five times of daily prayer, and the Hindus have lost their worship as well.

ਚਉਕੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਹਿੰਦਵਾਣੀਆ ਕਿਉ ਟਿਕੇ ਕਢਹਿ ਨਾਇ ॥

Cha▫uké viṇ hinḋvaaṇee▫aa ki▫o tiké kadʰėh naa▫é.

Without their sacred squares, how shall the Hindu women bathe and apply the frontal marks to their foreheads?

ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਹੁਣਿ ਕਹਣਿ ਨ ਮਿਲੈ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥੬॥

Raam na kabhoo chéṫi▫o huṇ kahaṇ na milæ kʰuḋaa▫é. ||6||

They never remembered their Lord as Ram, and now they cannot even chant Khudaa-i||6||

ਇਕਿ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਇਕਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਪੁਛਹਿ ਸੁਖ ॥

Ik gʰar aavahi aapṇæ ik mil mil puchʰėh sukʰ.

Some have returned to their homes, and meeting their relatives, they ask about their safety.

ਇਕਨੑਾ ਏਹੋ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਬਹਿ ਬਹਿ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਦੁਖ ॥

Iknĥaa ého likʰi▫aa bahi bahi rovėh ḋukʰ.

For some, it is preordained that they shall sit and cry out in pain.

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਥੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਨੁਖ ॥੭॥੧੧॥

Jo ṫis bʰaavæ so ṫʰee▫æ Naanak ki▫aa maanukʰ. ||7||11||

Whatever pleases Him, comes to pass. O Nanak! What is the fate of mankind? ||7||11||

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਖੇਲ ਤਬੇਲਾ ਘੋੜੇ ਕਹਾ ਭੇਰੀ ਸਹਨਾਈ ॥

Kahaa so kʰél ṫabélaa gʰoṛé kahaa bʰéree sėhnaa▫ee.

Where are the games, the stables, the horses? Where are the drums and the bugles?

ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਤੇਗਬੰਦ ਗਾਡੇਰੜਿ ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਲਾਲ ਕਵਾਈ ॥

Kahaa so ṫégbanḋ gaadéraṛ kahaa so laal kavaa▫ee.

Where are the sword-belts and chariots? Where are those scarlet uniforms?

ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਆਰਸੀਆ ਮੁਹ ਬੰਕੇ ਐਥੈ ਦਿਸਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧॥

Kahaa so aarsee▫aa muh banké æṫʰæ ḋisėh naahee. ||1||

Where are the rings and the beautiful faces? They are no longer to be seen here. ||1||

ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂ ਗੋਸਾਈ ॥

Ih jag ṫéraa ṫoo gosaa▫ee.

This world is Yours; You are the Lord of the Universe.

ਏਕ ਘੜੀ ਮਹਿ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ਜਰੁ ਵੰਡਿ ਦੇਵੈ ਭਾਂਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ék gʰaṛee mėh ṫʰaap uṫʰaapé jar vand ḋévæ bʰaaⁿ▫ee. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

In an instant, You establish and disestablish. You distribute wealth as it pleases You. ||1||Pause||

ਕਹਾਂ ਸੁ ਘਰ ਦਰ ਮੰਡਪ ਮਹਲਾ ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਬੰਕ ਸਰਾਈ ॥

Kahaaⁿ so gʰar ḋar mandap mėhlaa kahaa so bank saraa▫ee.

Where are the houses, the gates, the hotels and palaces? Where are those beautiful way-stations?

ਕਹਾਂ ਸੁ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਵੇਖਿ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

Kahaaⁿ so séj sukʰaalee kaamaṇ jis vékʰ neeḋ na paa▫ee.

Where are those beautiful women, reclining on their beds, whose beauty would not allow one to sleep?

ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਪਾਨ ਤੰਬੋਲੀ ਹਰਮਾ ਹੋਈਆ ਛਾਈ ਮਾਈ ॥੨॥

Kahaa so paan ṫambolee harmaa ho▫ee▫aa chʰaa▫ee maa▫ee. ||2||

Where are those betel leaves, their sellers, and the harem? They have vanished like shadows. ||2||

ਇਸੁ ਜਰ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਘਣੀ ਵਿਗੁਤੀ ਇਨਿ ਜਰ ਘਣੀ ਖੁਆਈ ॥

Is jar kaaraṇ gʰaṇee viguṫee in jar gʰaṇee kʰu▫aa▫ee.

For the sake of this wealth, so many were ruined; because of this wealth, so many have been disgraced.

ਪਾਪਾ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੁਇਆ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

Paapaa baajʰahu hovæ naahee mu▫i▫aa saaṫʰ na jaa▫ee.

It was not gathered without sin, and it does not go along with the dead.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਏ ਕਰਤਾ ਖੁਸਿ ਲਏ ਚੰਗਿਆਈ ॥੩॥

Jis no aap kʰu▫aa▫é karṫaa kʰus la▫é changi▫aa▫ee. ||3||

Those, whom the Creator Lord would destroy - first He strips them of virtue. ||3||

ਕੋਟੀ ਹੂ ਪੀਰ ਵਰਜਿ ਰਹਾਏ ਜਾ ਮੀਰੁ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਧਾਇਆ ॥

Kotee hoo peer varaj rahaa▫é jaa meer suṇi▫aa ḋʰaa▫i▫aa.

Millions of religious leaders failed to halt the invader, when they heard of the Emperor’s invasion.
