gurmukh vichahu ha-umai jaa-ay.
The Gurmukh eradicates egotism from within.

gurmuiK mYlu n lwgY Awie ] (230-1)
gurmukh mail na laagai aa-ay.
No filth sticks to the Gurmukh.

gurmuiK nwmu vsY min Awie ]2] (230-1)
gurmukh naam vasai man aa-ay. ||2||
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, comes to dwell within the mind of the Gurmukh. ||2||

gurmuiK krm Drm sic hoeI ] (230-2)
gurmukh karam Dharam sach ho-ee.
Through karma and Dharma, good actions and righteous faith, the Gurmukh becomes true.

gurmuiK AhMkwru jlwey doeI ] (230-2)
gurmukh ahaNkaar jalaa-ay do-ee.
The Gurmukh burns away egotism and duality.

gurmuiK nwim rqy suKu hoeI ]3] (230-2)
gurmukh naam ratay sukh ho-ee. ||3||
The Gurmukh is attuned to the Naam, and is at peace. ||3||

Awpxw mnu prboDhu bUJhu soeI ] (230-3)
aapnaa man parboDhahu boojhhu so-ee.
Instruct your own mind, and understand Him.

lok smJwvhu suxy n koeI ] (230-3)
lok samjhaavhu sunay na ko-ee.
You may preach to other people, but no one will listen.

gurmuiK smJhu sdw suKu hoeI ]4] (230-3)
gurmukh samjhahu sadaa sukh ho-ee. ||4||
The Gurmukh understands, and is always at peace. ||4||

mnmuiK fMPu bhuqu cqurweI ] (230-4)
manmukh damf bahut chaturaa-ee.
The self-willed manmukhs are such clever hypocrites.

jo ikCu kmwvY su Qwie n pweI ] (230-4)
jo kichh kamaavai so thaa-ay na paa-ee.
No matter what they do, it is not acceptable.

AwvY jwvY Taur n kweI ]5] (230-4)
aavai jaavai tha-ur na kaa-ee. ||5||
They come and go in reincarnation, and find no place of rest. ||5||

mnmuK krm kry bhuqu AiBmwnw ] (230-5)
manmukh karam karay bahut abhimaanaa.
The manmukhs perform their rituals, but they are totally selfish and conceited.

bg ijau lwie bhY inq iDAwnw ] (230-5)
bag ji-o laa-ay bahai nit Dhi-aanaa.
They sit there, like storks, pretending to meditate.

jim pkiVAw qb hI pCuqwnw ]6] (230-5)
jam pakrhi-aa tab hee pachhutaanaa. ||6||
Caught by the Messenger of Death, they shall regret and repent in the end. ||6||

ibnu siqgur syvy mukiq n hoeI ] (230-6)
bin satgur sayvay mukat na ho-ee.
Without serving the True Guru, liberation is not obtained.

gur prswdI imlY hir soeI ] (230-6)
gur parsaadee milai har so-ee.
By Guru's Grace, one meets the Lord.

guru dwqw jug cwry hoeI ]7] (230-6)
gur daataa jug chaaray ho-ee. ||7||
The Guru is the Great Giver, throughout the four ages. ||7||

gurmuiK jwiq piq nwmy vifAweI ] (230-7)
gurmukh jaat pat naamay vadi-aa-ee.
For the Gurmukh, the Naam is social status, honor and glorious greatness.

swier kI puqRI ibdwir gvweI ] (230-7)
saa-ir kee putree bidaar gavaa-ee.
Maya, the daughter of the ocean, has been slain.

nwnk ibnu nwvY JUTI cqurweI ]8]2] (230-7)
naanak bin naavai jhoothee chaturaa-ee. ||8||2||
O Nanak, without the Name, all clever tricks are false. ||8||2||

ga-orhee mehlaa 3.
Gauree, Third Mehl:

iesu jug kw Drmu pVhu qum BweI ] (230-8)
is jug kaa Dharam parhahu tum bhaa-ee.
Learn the Dharma of this age, O Siblings of Destiny;

pUrY guir sB soJI pweI ] (230-8)
poorai gur sabh sojhee paa-ee.
all understanding is obtained from the Perfect Guru.

AYQY AgY hir nwmu sKweI ]1] (230-9)
aithai agai har naam sakhaa-ee. ||1||
Here and hereafter, the Lord's Name is our Companion. ||1||

rwm pVhu min krhu bIcwru ] (230-9)
raam parhahu man karahu beechaar.
Learn of the Lord, and contemplate Him in your mind.

gur prswdI mYlu auqwru ]1] rhwau ] (230-9)
gur parsaadee mail utaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
By Guru's Grace, your filth shall be washed away. ||1||Pause||

vwid ivroiD n pwieAw jwie ] (230-10)
vaad viroDh na paa-i-aa jaa-ay.
Through argument and debate, He cannot be found.

mnu qnu PIkw dUjY Bwie ] (230-10)
man tan feekaa doojai bhaa-ay.
The mind and body are made insipid through the love of duality.

gur kY sbid sic ilv lwie ]2] (230-10)
gur kai sabad sach liv laa-ay. ||2||
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, lovingly attune yourself to the True Lord. ||2||

haumY mYlw iehu sMswrw ] (230-11)
ha-umai mailaa ih sansaaraa.
This world is polluted with egotism.

inq qIriQ nwvY n jwie AhMkwrw ] (230-11)
nit tirath naavai na jaa-ay ahaNkaaraa.
By taking cleansing baths daily at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, egotism is not eliminated.

ibnu gur Byty jmu kry KuAwrw ]3] (230-11)
bin gur bhaytay jam karay khu-aaraa. ||3||
Without meeting the Guru, they are tortured by Death. ||3||

so jnu swcw ij haumY mwrY ] (230-12)
so jan saachaa je ha-umai maarai.
Those humble beings are true, who conquer their ego.

gur kY sbid pMc sMGwrY ] (230-12)
gur kai sabad panch sanghaarai.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they conquer the five thieves.

Awip qrY sgly kul qwrY ]4] (230-12)
aap tarai saglay kul taarai. ||4||
They save themselves, and save all their generations as well. ||4||

mwieAw moih nit bwjI pweI ] (230-13)
maa-i-aa mohi nat baajee paa-ee.
The Actor has staged the drama of emotional attachment to Maya.

mnmuK AMD rhy lptweI ] (230-13)
manmukh anDh rahay laptaa-ee.
The self-willed manmukhs cling blindly to it.

gurmuiK Ailpq rhy ilv lweI ]5] (230-13)
gurmukh alipat rahay liv laa-ee. ||5||
The Gurmukhs remain detached, and lovingly attune themselves to the Lord. ||5||

bhuqy ByK krY ByKDwrI ] (230-14)
bahutay bhaykh karai bhaykh-Dhaaree.
The disguisers put on their various disguises.

AMqir iqsnw iPrY AhMkwrI ] (230-14)
antar tisnaa firai ahaNkaaree.
Desire rages within them, and they carry on egotistically.

Awpu n cInY bwjI hwrI ]6] (230-14)
aap na cheenai baajee haaree. ||6||
They do not understand themselves, and they lose the game of life. ||6||

kwpV pihir kry cqurweI ] (230-15)
kaaparh pahir karay chaturaa-ee.
Putting on religious robes, they act so clever,

mwieAw moih Aiq Brim BulweI ] (230-15)
maa-i-aa mohi at bharam bhulaa-ee.
but they are totally deluded by doubt and emotional attachment to Maya.

ibnu gur syvy bhuqu duKu pweI ]7] (230-15)
bin gur sayvay bahut dukh paa-ee. ||7||
Without serving the Guru, they suffer in terrible pain. ||7||

nwim rqy sdw bYrwgI ] (230-16)
naam ratay sadaa bairaagee.
Those who are attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, remain detached forever.

igRhI AMqir swic ilv lwgI ] (230-16)
garihee antar saach liv laagee.
Even as householders, they lovingly attune themselves to the True Lord.

nwnk siqguru syvih sy vfBwgI ]8]3] (230-16)
naanak satgur sayveh say vadbhaagee. ||8||3||
O Nanak, those who serve the True Guru are blessed and very fortunate. ||8||3||

Gauree, Third Mehl:

bRhmw mUlu vyd AiBAwsw ] (230-17)
barahmaa mool vayd abhi-aasaa.
Brahma is the founder of the study of the Vedas.

iqs qy aupjy dyv moh ipAwsw ] (230-17)
tis tay upjay dayv moh pi-aasaa.
From him emanated the gods, enticed by desire.

qRY gux Brmy nwhI inj Gir vwsw ]1] (230-18)
tarai gun bharmay naahee nij ghar vaasaa. ||1||
They wander in the three qualities, and they do not dwell within their own home. ||1||

hm hir rwKy siqgurU imlwieAw ] (230-18)
ham har raakhay satguroo milaa-i-aa.
The Lord has saved me; I have met the True Guru.

Anidnu Bgiq hir nwmu idRVwieAw ]1] rhwau ] (230-19)
an-din bhagat har naam drirh-aa-i-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He has implanted devotional worship of the Lord's Name, night and day. ||1||Pause||

qRY gux bwxI bRhm jMjwlw ] (230-19)
tarai gun banee barahm janjaalaa.
The songs of Brahma entangle people in the three qualities.

piV vwdu vKwxih isir mwry jmkwlw ] (230-19)
parh vaad vakaaneh sir maaray jamkaalaa.
Reading about the debates and disputes, they are hit over the head by the Messenger of Death.
