ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Maajʰ mėhlaa 3.

Maajh, Third Mehl:

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪੜਹਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ॥

Manmukʰ paṛėh pandiṫ kahaavėh.

The self-willed Manmukhs read and recite; they are called Pandits-spiritual scholars.

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥

Ḋoojæ bʰaa▫é mahaa ḋukʰ paavahi.

But they are in love with duality, and they suffer in terrible pain.

ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਾਤੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥

Bikʰi▫aa maaṫé kichʰ soojʰæ naahee fir fir joonee aavaṇi▫aa. ||1||

Intoxicated with vice, they understand nothing at all. They are reincarnated, over and over again. ||1||

ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥

Ha▫o vaaree jee▫o vaaree ha▫umæ maar milaavaṇi▫aa.

I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who subdue their ego, and unite with the Lord.

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਪੀਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Gur sévaa ṫé har man vasi▫aa har ras sahj pee▫aavṇi▫aa. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

They serve the Guru, and the Lord dwells within their minds; they intuitively drink the sublime essence of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਵੇਦੁ ਪੜਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਆਇਆ ॥

véḋ paṛėh har ras nahee aa▫i▫aa.

The Pandits read the Vedas, but they do not obtain the Lord’s essence.

ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਮੋਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

vaaḋ vakaaṇėh mohé maa▫i▫aa.

Intoxicated with Maya, they argue and debate.

ਅਗਿਆਨਮਤੀ ਸਦਾ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝਿ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥

Agi▫aanmaṫee saḋaa anḋʰi▫aaraa gurmukʰ boojʰ har gaavaṇi▫aa. ||2||

The foolish intellectuals are forever in spiritual darkness. The Gurmukhs understand, and sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||2||

ਅਕਥੋ ਕਥੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ॥

Akṫʰo kaṫʰee▫æ sabaḋ suhaavæ.

The Indescribable is described only through the beauteous Word of the Shabad.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਮਨਿ ਸਚੋ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

Gurmaṫee man sacho bʰaavæ.

Through the Guru’s Teachings, the Truth becomes pleasing to the mind.

ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਰਵਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਚਿ ਰੰਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥

Sacho sach ravėh ḋin raaṫee ih man sach rangaaviṇ▫aa. ||3||

Those who speak of the truest of the true, day and night-their minds are imbued with the Truth. ||3||

ਜੋ ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਤਿਨ ਸਚੋ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

Jo sach raṫé ṫin sacho bʰaavæ.

Those who are attuned to Truth, love the Truth.

ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਵੈ ॥

Aapé ḋé▫é na pachʰoṫaavæ.

The Lord Himself bestows this gift; He shall not take it back.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਤਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਚੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥

Gur kæ sabaḋ saḋaa sach jaaṫaa mil saché sukʰ paavṇi▫aa. ||4||

Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, the True Lord is known forever; meeting the True One, peace is found. ||4||

ਕੂੜੁ ਕੁਸਤੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥

Kooṛ kusaṫ ṫinaa mæl na laagæ.

The filth of fraud and falsehood does not stick to those,

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗੈ ॥

Gur parsaadee an▫ḋin jaagæ.

who, by Guru’s Grace, remain awake and aware, night and day.

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਘਟ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥

Nirmal naam vasæ gʰat bʰeeṫar joṫee joṫ milaavaṇi▫aa. ||5||

The Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides deep within their hearts; their light merges into the Light. ||5||

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਪੜਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ॥

Ṫaræ guṇ paṛėh har ṫaṫ na jaaṇėh.

They read about the three qualities, but they do not know the essential reality of the Lord.

ਮੂਲਹੁ ਭੁਲੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ॥

Moolhu bʰulé gur sabaḋ na pachʰaaṇėh.

They forget the Primal Lord, the Source of all, and they do not recognize the Word of the Guru’s Shabad.

ਮੋਹ ਬਿਆਪੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥

Moh bi▫aapé kichʰ soojʰæ naahee gur sabḋee har paavṇi▫aa. ||6||

They are engrossed in emotional attachment; they do not understand anything at all. Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, the Lord is found. ||6||

ਵੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

véḋ pukaaræ ṫaribaḋʰ maa▫i▫aa.

The Vedas proclaim that Maya is of three qualities.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਨ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇਆ ॥

Manmukʰ na boojʰėh ḋoojæ bʰaa▫i▫aa.

The self-willed Manmukhs, in love with duality, do not understand.

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਪੜਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥

Ṫaræ guṇ paṛėh har ék na jaaṇėh bin boojʰé ḋukʰ paavṇi▫aa. ||7||

They read of the three qualities, but they do not know the One Lord. Without understanding, they obtain only pain and suffering. ||7||

ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥

Jaa ṫis bʰaavæ ṫaa aap milaa▫é.

When it pleases the Lord, He unites us with Himself.

ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥

Gur sabḋee sahsaa ḋookʰ chukaa▫é.

Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, skepticism and suffering are dispelled.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੀ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਨਾਮੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੩੦॥੩੧॥

Naanak naavæ kee sachee vadi▫aa▫ee naamo man sukʰ paavṇi▫aa. ||8||30||31||

O Nanak! True is the Greatness of the Name. Believing in the Name, peace is obtained. ||8||30||31||

ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Maajh, Third Mehl:

ਨਿਰਗੁਣੁ ਸਰਗੁਣੁ ਆਪੇ ਸੋਈ ॥

Nirguṇ sarguṇ aapé so▫ee.

The Lord Himself is Unmanifest and Unrelated; He is Manifest and Related as well.

ਤਤੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

Ṫaṫ pachʰaaṇæ so pandiṫ ho▫ee.

Those who recognize this essential reality are the true Pandits, the spiritual scholars.

ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥

Aap ṫaræ saglé kul ṫaaræ har naam man vasaavaṇi▫aa. ||1||

They save themselves, and save all their families and ancestors as well, when they enshrine the Lord’s Name in the mind. ||1||

ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਖਿ ਸਾਦੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥

Ha▫o vaaree jee▫o vaaree har ras chakʰ saaḋ paavṇi▫aa.

I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who taste the essence of the Lord, and savor its taste.

ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Har ras chaakʰahi sé jan nirmal nirmal naam ḋʰi▫aavaṇi▫aa. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

Those who taste this essence of the Lord are the pure, immaculate beings. They meditate on the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਸੋ ਨਿਹਕਰਮੀ ਜੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥

So nihkarmee jo sabaḋ beechaaré.

Those who reflect upon the Shabad are beyond karma.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ॥

Anṫar ṫaṫ gi▫aan ha▫umæ maaré.

They subdue their ego, and find the essence of wisdom, deep within their being.

ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਏ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਟਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥

Naam paḋaaraṫʰ na▫o niḋʰ paa▫é ṫaræ guṇ mét samaavaṇi▫aa. ||2||

They obtain the nine treasures of the wealth of the Naam. Rising above the three qualities, they merge into the Lord. ||2||

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਹਕਰਮੀ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥

Ha▫umæ karæ nihkarmee na hovæ.

Those who act in ego do not go beyond karma.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਖੋਵੈ ॥

Gur parsaadee ha▫umæ kʰovæ.

It is only by Guru’s Grace that one is rid of ego.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਬੇਕੁ ਸਦਾ ਆਪੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥

Anṫar bibék saḋaa aap veechaaré gur sabḋee guṇ gaavaṇi▫aa. ||3||

Those who have discriminating minds, continually examine their own selves. Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, they sing the Lord’s Glorious Praises. ||3||

ਹਰਿ ਸਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸੋਈ ॥

Har sar saagar nirmal so▫ee.

The Lord is the most pure and sublime Ocean.

ਸੰਤ ਚੁਗਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਈ ॥

Sanṫ chugėh niṫ gurmukʰ ho▫ee.

The Saintly Gurmukhs continually peck at the Naam, like swans pecking at pearls in the ocean.

ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਚੁਕਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥

Isnaan karahi saḋaa ḋin raaṫee ha▫umæ mæl chukaavaṇi▫aa. ||4||

They bathe in it continually, day and night, and the filth of ego is washed away. ||4||

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੰਸਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥

Nirmal hansaa parém pi▫aar.

The pure swans, with love and affection,

ਹਰਿ ਸਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥

Har sar vasæ ha▫umæ maar.

dwell in the Ocean of the Lord, and subdue their ego.
