1354 ਧ੍ਰਿਗੰਤ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸਨੇਹੰ ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਸਨੇਹੰ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਬਾਂਧਵਹ ॥ Ḋʰariganṫ maaṫ piṫaa sanéhaⁿ ḋʰarig sanéhaⁿ bʰaraaṫ baaⁿḋʰvah. Cursed is loving attachment to one’s mother and father; cursed is loving attachment to one’s siblings and relatives. ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਸ੍ਨੇਹੰ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਲਾਸ ਸੁਤਹ ॥ Ḋʰarig snėh▫aⁿ baniṫaa bilaas suṫah. Cursed is attachment to the joys of family life with one’s spouse and children. ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਸ੍ਨੇਹੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਾਰਥ ਕਹ ॥ Ḋʰarig snėh▫aⁿ garihaaraṫʰ kah. Cursed is attachment to household affairs. ਸਾਧਸੰਗ ਸ੍ਨੇਹ ਸਤੵਿੰ ਸੁਖਯੰ ਬਸੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕਹ ॥੨॥ Saaḋʰsang snėh saṫi▫yaⁿ sukʰ▫yaⁿ basanṫ naankah. ||2|| Only loving attachment to the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, is True. Nanak dwells there in peace. ||2|| ਮਿਥੵੰਤ ਦੇਹੰ ਖੀਣੰਤ ਬਲਨੰ ॥ Miṫʰ▫yanṫ ḋéhaⁿ kʰeeṇanṫ balanaⁿ. The body is false; its power is temporary. ਬਰਧੰਤਿ ਜਰੂਆ ਹਿਤੵੰਤ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ Barḋʰanṫ jaroo▫aa hiṫ▫yanṫ maa▫i▫aa. It grows old; its love for Maya increases greatly. ਅਤੵੰਤ ਆਸਾ ਆਥਿਤੵ ਭਵਨੰ ॥ Aṫ▫yanṫ aasaa aaṫʰiṫ▫y bʰavanaⁿ. The human is only a temporary guest in the home of the body, but he has high hopes. ਗਨੰਤ ਸ੍ਵਾਸਾ ਭੈਯਾਨ ਧਰਮੰ ॥ Gananṫ savasaa bʰæyaan ḋʰarmaⁿ. The Righteous Judge of Dharma is relentless; he counts each and every breath. ਪਤੰਤਿ ਮੋਹ ਕੂਪ ਦੁਰਲਭੵ ਦੇਹੰ ਤਤ ਆਸ੍ਰਯੰ ਨਾਨਕ ॥ Paṫanṫ moh koop ḋurlabʰa▫y ḋéhaⁿ ṫaṫ aasar▫yaⁿ Naanak. The human body, so difficult to obtain, has fallen into the deep dark pit of emotional attachment. O Nanak! Its only support is God, the Essence of Reality. ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ॥੩॥ Gobinḋ gobinḋ gobinḋ gopaal kirpaa. ||3|| O God, Lord of the World, Lord of the Universe, Master of the Universe, please be kind to me. ||3|| ਕਾਚ ਕੋਟੰ ਰਚੰਤਿ ਤੋਯੰ ਲੇਪਨੰ ਰਕਤ ਚਰਮਣਹ ॥ Kaach kotaⁿ rachanṫ ṫo▫yaⁿ lépanaⁿ rakaṫ charamṇėh. This fragile body-fortress is made up of water, plastered with blood and wrapped in skin. ਨਵੰਤ ਦੁਆਰੰ ਭੀਤ ਰਹਿਤੰ ਬਾਇ ਰੂਪੰ ਅਸਥੰਭਨਹ ॥ Navanṫ ḋu▫aaraⁿ bʰeeṫ rahiṫaⁿ baa▫é roopaⁿ asṫʰambʰnah. It has nine gates, but no doors; it is supported by pillars of wind, the channels of the breath. ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮੰ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰੰਤਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਾਨੰਤਿ ਅਸਥਿਰੰ ॥ Gobinḋ naamaⁿ nah simranṫ agi▫aanee jaananṫ asṫʰiraⁿ. The ignorant person does not meditate in remembrance of the Lord of the Universe; he thinks that this body is permanent. ਦੁਰਲਭ ਦੇਹ ਉਧਰੰਤ ਸਾਧ ਸਰਣ ਨਾਨਕ ॥ Ḋurlabʰ ḋéh uḋʰranṫ saaḋʰ saraṇ Naanak. This precious body is saved and redeemed in the Sanctuary of the Holy, O Nanak! ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ਜਪੰਤਿ ॥੪॥ Har har har har har haré japanṫ. ||4|| chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, Har, Har, Har, Haray. ||4|| ਸੁਭੰਤ ਤੁਯੰ ਅਚੁਤ ਗੁਣਗੵੰ ਪੂਰਨੰ ਬਹੁਲੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲਾ ॥ Subʰanṫ ṫu▫yaⁿ achuṫ guṇga▫yaⁿ pooranaⁿ bahulo kirpaalaa. O Glorious, Eternal and Imperishable, Perfect and Abundantly Compassionate, ਗੰਭੀਰੰ ਊਚੈ ਸਰਬਗਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ Gambʰeeraⁿ oochæ sarbag apaaraa. Profound and Unfathomable, Lofty and Exalted, All-knowing and Infinite Lord God. ਭ੍ਰਿਤਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਿਅੰ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ਚਰਣੰ ॥ Bʰariṫi▫aa pari▫aⁿ bisraam charṇaⁿ. O Lover of Your devoted servants, Your Feet are a Sanctuary of Peace. ਅਨਾਥ ਨਾਥੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣੰ ॥੫॥ Anaaṫʰ naaṫʰé Naanak sarṇaⁿ. ||5|| O Master of the masterless, Helper of the helpless, Nanak seeks Your Sanctuary. ||5|| ਮ੍ਰਿਗੀ ਪੇਖੰਤ ਬਧਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੇਣ ਲਖੵ ਆਵਧਹ ॥ Marigee pékʰanṫ baḋʰik par▫haaréṇ lakʰ▫y aavḋʰah. Seeing the deer, the hunter aims his weapons. ਅਹੋ ਜਸੵ ਰਖੇਣ ਗੋਪਾਲਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਰੋਮ ਨ ਛੇਦੵਤੇ ॥੬॥ Aho jas▫y rakʰéṇ gopaalah Naanak rom na chʰéd▫yṫé. ||6|| But if one is protected by the Lord of the World, O Nanak! Not a hair on his head will be touched. ||6|| ਬਹੁ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਤਾ ਬਲਵੰਤ ਕਾਰੀ ਸੇਵੰਤ ਸੂਰਾ ਚਤੁਰ ਦਿਸਹ ॥ Baho jaṫan karṫaa balvanṫ kaaree sévanṫ sooraa chaṫur ḋisah. He may be surrounded on all four sides by servants and powerful warriors; ਬਿਖਮ ਥਾਨ ਬਸੰਤ ਊਚਹ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰੰਤ ਮਰਣੰ ਕਦਾਂਚਹ ॥ Bikʰam ṫʰaan basanṫ oochah nah simranṫ marṇaⁿ kaḋaaⁿchėh. he may dwell in a lofty place, difficult to approach, and never even think of death. ਹੋਵੰਤਿ ਆਗਿਆ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਪੁਰਖਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀਟੀ ਸਾਸ ਅਕਰਖਤੇ ॥੭॥ Hovanṫ aagi▫aa bʰagvaan pukʰah Naanak keetee saas akarkʰaṫé. ||7|| But when the Order comes from the Primal Lord God, O Nanak! Even an ant can take away his breath of life. ||7|| ਸਬਦੰ ਰਤੰ ਹਿਤੰ ਮਇਆ ਕੀਰਤੰ ਕਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਕ੍ਰਿਤੁਆ ॥ Sabḋaⁿ raṫaⁿ hiṫaⁿ ma▫i▫aa keerṫaⁿ kalee karam kriṫu▫aa. To be imbued and attuned to the Word of the Shabad; to be kind and compassionate; to sing the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praises - these are the most worthwhile actions in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga. ਮਿਟੰਤਿ ਤਤ੍ਰਾਗਤ ਭਰਮ ਮੋਹੰ ॥ Mitanṫ ṫaṫraagaṫ bʰaram mohaⁿ. In this way, one’s inner doubts and emotional attachments are dispelled. ਭਗਵਾਨ ਰਮਣੰ ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਥਾਨੵਿੰ ॥ Bʰagvaan ramṇaⁿ sarbaṫar ṫʰaani▫yaⁿ. God is pervading and permeating all places. ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਤੁਯੰ ਅਮੋਘ ਦਰਸਨੰ ਬਸੰਤ ਸਾਧ ਰਸਨਾ ॥ Ḋarisat ṫu▫yaⁿ amogʰ ḋarsanaⁿ basanṫ saaḋʰ rasnaa. So, obtain the Blessed Vision of His Darshan; He dwells upon the tongues of the Holy. ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਿਅੰ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪਨਾ ॥੮॥ Har har har haré Naanak pari▫aⁿ jaap japnaa. ||8|| O Nanak! Meditate and chant the Name of the Beloved Lord, Har, Har, Har, Haray. ||8|| ਘਟੰਤ ਰੂਪੰ ਘਟੰਤ ਦੀਪੰ ਘਟੰਤ ਰਵਿ ਸਸੀਅਰ ਨਖੵਤ੍ਰ ਗਗਨੰ ॥ Gʰatanṫ roopaⁿ gʰatanṫ deepaⁿ gʰatanṫ rav sasee▫ar nakʰ▫yaṫar gaganaⁿ. Beauty fades away, islands fade away, the sun, moon, stars and sky fade away. ਘਟੰਤ ਬਸੁਧਾ ਗਿਰਿ ਤਰ ਸਿਖੰਡੰ ॥ Gʰatanṫ basuḋʰaa gir ṫar sikʰaⁿdaⁿ. The earth, mountains, forests and lands fade away. ਘਟੰਤ ਲਲਨਾ ਸੁਤ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਹੀਤੰ ॥ Gʰatanṫ lalnaa suṫ bʰaraaṫ heeṫaⁿ. one’s spouse, children, siblings and loved friends fade away. ਘਟੰਤ ਕਨਿਕ ਮਾਨਿਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਸ੍ਵਰੂਪੰ ॥ Gʰatanṫ kanik maanik maa▫i▫aa savroopaⁿ. Gold and jewels and the incomparable beauty of Maya fade away. ਨਹ ਘਟੰਤ ਕੇਵਲ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਅਚੁਤ ॥ Nah gʰatanṫ kéval gopaal achuṫ. Only the Eternal, Unchanging Lord does not fade away. ਅਸਥਿਰੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ॥੯॥ Asṫʰiraⁿ Naanak saaḋʰ jan. ||9|| O Nanak! Only the humble Saints are steady and stable forever. ||9|| ਨਹ ਬਿਲੰਬ ਧਰਮੰ ਬਿਲੰਬ ਪਾਪੰ ॥ Nah bilamb ḋʰarmaⁿ bilamb paapaⁿ. Do not delay in practicing righteousness; delay in committing sins. ਦ੍ਰਿੜੰਤ ਨਾਮੰ ਤਜੰਤ ਲੋਭੰ ॥ Ḋariṛ▫aaⁿṫ naamaⁿ ṫajanṫ lobʰaⁿ. Implant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within yourself, and abandon greed. ਸਰਣਿ ਸੰਤੰ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਨਾਸੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੰ ਧਰਮ ਲਖੵਿਣ ॥ Saraṇ sanṫaⁿ kilbikʰ naasaⁿ paraapṫaⁿ ḋʰaram lakʰ▫yiṇ. In the Sanctuary of the Saints, the sins are erased. The character of righteousness is received by that person, ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹ ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਮਾਧਵਹ ॥੧੦॥ Naanak jih suparsan maaḋʰvah. ||10|| O Nanak! With whom the Lord is pleased and satisfied. ||10|| ਮਿਰਤ ਮੋਹੰ ਅਲਪ ਬੁਧੵੰ ਰਚੰਤਿ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਸਾਹੰ ॥ Miraṫ mohaⁿ alap buḋʰ▫yaⁿ rachanṫ baniṫaa binoḋ saahaⁿ. The person of shallow understanding is dying in emotional attachment; he is engrossed in pursuits of pleasure with his wife. ਜੌਬਨ ਬਹਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਕਨਿਕ ਕੁੰਡਲਹ ॥ Jouban bahikaram kanik kundlah. With youthful beauty and golden earrings, ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਮੰਦਿਰ ਸੋਭੰਤਿ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਾ ਇਤੵੰਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਬੵਾਪਿਤੰ ॥ Bachiṫar manḋir sobʰanṫ basṫaraa iṫ▫yanṫ maa▫i▫aa bi▫yaapiṫaⁿ. wondrous mansions, decorations and clothes - this is how Maya clings to him. ਹੇ ਅਚੁਤ ਸਰਣਿ ਸੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੋ ਭਗਵਾਨਏ ਨਮਹ ॥੧੧॥ Hé achuṫ saraṇ sanṫ Naanak bʰo bʰagvaana▫é namah. ||11|| O Eternal, Unchanging, Benevolent Lord God, O Sanctuary of the Saints, Nanak humbly bows to You. ||11|| ਜਨਮੰ ਤ ਮਰਣੰ ਹਰਖੰ ਤ ਸੋਗੰ ਭੋਗੰ ਤ ਰੋਗੰ ॥ Janmaⁿ ṫa marṇaⁿ harkʰaⁿ ṫa sogaⁿ bʰogaⁿ ṫa rogaⁿ. If there is birth, then there is death. If there is pleasure, then there is pain. If there is enjoyment, then there is disease. ਊਚੰ ਤ ਨੀਚੰ ਨਾਨੑਾ ਸੁ ਮੂਚੰ ॥ Oonchaⁿ ṫa neechaⁿ naanĥaa so moochaⁿ. If there is high, then there is low. If there is small, then there is great. |
