ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਦੂਜੈ ਬੋਲਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

Manmukʱ ḋoojæ bol na jaaṇæ.

The self-willed Manmukh, in duality, does not know how to speak.

ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਅੰਧਲੀ ਬੋਲੀ ਆਇ ਗਇਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥

Anḋʱulé kee maṫ anḋʱlee bolee aa▫é ga▫i▫aa ḋukʱ ṫaahaa hé. ||11||

The blind person has a blind and deaf intellect; coming and going in reincarnation, he suffers in pain. ||11||

ਦੁਖ ਮਹਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਦੁਖ ਮਹਿ ਮਰਣਾ ॥

Ḏukʱ mėh janmæ ḋukʱ mėh marṇaa.

In pain he is born, and in pain he dies.

ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਮਿਟੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾ ॥

Ḏookʱ na mitæ bin gur kee sarṇaa.

His pain is not relieved, without seeking the Sanctuary of the Guru.

ਦੂਖੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਦੂਖੀ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਕਿਆ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ਕਿਆ ਲੈ ਜਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥

Ḏookʱee upjæ ḋookʱee binsæ ki▫aa læ aa▫i▫aa ki▫aa læ jaahaa hé. ||12||

In pain he is created, and in pain he perishes. What has he brought with himself? And what will he take away? ||12||

ਸਚੀ ਕਰਣੀ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਕਾਰਾ ॥

Sachee karṇee gur kee sirkaaraa.

True are the actions of those who are under the Guru’s influence.

ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਮ ਧਾਰਾ ॥

Āvaṇ jaaṇ nahee jam ḋʱaaraa.

They do not come and go in reincarnation, and they are not subject to the laws of Death.

ਡਾਲ ਛੋਡਿ ਤਤੁ ਮੂਲੁ ਪਰਾਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਓਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥

Daal chʱod ṫaṫ mool paraaṫaa man saachaa omaahaa hé. ||13||

Whoever abandons the branches, and clings to the true root, enjoys true ecstasy within his mind. ||13||

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਲੋਗ ਨਹੀ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰੈ ॥

Har ké log nahee jam maaræ.

Death cannot strike down the people of the Lord.

ਨਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਪੰਥਿ ਕਰਾਰੈ ॥

Naa ḋukʱ ḋékʱėh panṫʱ karaaræ.

They do not see pain on the most difficult path.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਕਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥

Raam naam gʱat anṫar poojaa avar na ḋoojaa kaahaa hé. ||14||

Deep within the nucleus of their hearts, they worship and adore the Lord’s Name; there is nothing else at all for them. ||14||

ਓੜੁ ਨ ਕਥਨੈ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਜਾਈ ॥

Oṛ na kaṫʱnæ sifaṫ sajaa▫ee.

There is no end to the Lord’s sermon and Praise.

ਜਿਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਰਜਾਈ ॥

Ji▫o ṫuḋʱ bʱaavėh rahėh rajaa▫ee.

As it pleases You, I remain under Your Will.

ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧੇ ਜਾਨਿ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਚੇ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥

Ḏargėh pæḋʱé jaan suhélé hukam saché paaṫisaahaa hé. ||15||

I am embellished with robes of honor in the Court of the Lord, by the Order of the True King. ||15||

ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ਗੁਣ ਕਥਹਿ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥

Ki▫aa kahee▫æ guṇ kaṫʱėh gʱanéré.

How can I chant Your uncounted glories?

ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਵਡੇ ਵਡੇਰੇ ॥

Anṫ na paavahi vadé vadéré.

Even the greatest of the great do not know Your limits.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਤੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੬॥੧੨॥

Naanak saach milæ paṫ raakʱo ṫoo sir saahaa paaṫisaahaa hé. ||16||6||12||

Please bless Nanak with the Truth, and preserve his honor; You are the supreme emperor above the heads of kings. ||16||6||12||

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਦਖਣੀ ॥

Maaroo mėhlaa 1 ḋakʱ▫ṇee.

Maaroo, First Mehl, Dakhanee:

ਕਾਇਆ ਨਗਰੁ ਨਗਰ ਗੜ ਅੰਦਰਿ ॥

Kaa▫i▫aa nagar nagar gaṛ anḋar.

Deep within the body-village is the fortress.

ਸਾਚਾ ਵਾਸਾ ਪੁਰਿ ਗਗਨੰਦਰਿ ॥

Saachaa vaasaa pur gagnanḋar.

The dwelling of the True Lord is within the city of the Tenth Gate.

ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਥਾਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰਮਾਇਲੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੁ ਉਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥

Asṫʱir ṫʱaan saḋaa nirmaa▫il aapé aap upaa▫iḋaa. ||1||

This place is permanent and forever immaculate. He Himself created it. ||1||

ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੋਟ ਛਜੇ ਹਟਨਾਲੇ ॥

Anḋar kot chʱajé hatnaalé.

Within the fortress are balconies and bazaars.

ਆਪੇ ਲੇਵੈ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥

Āpé lévæ vasaṫ samaalé.

He Himself takes care of His merchandise.

ਬਜਰ ਕਪਾਟ ਜੜੇ ਜੜਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਖੋਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥

Bajar kapaat jaṛé jaṛ jaaṇæ gur sabḋee kʱolaa▫iḋaa. ||2||

The hard and heavy doors of the Tenth Gate are closed and locked. Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, they are thrown open. ||2||

ਭੀਤਰਿ ਕੋਟ ਗੁਫਾ ਘਰ ਜਾਈ ॥

Bʱeeṫar kot gufaa gʱar jaa▫ee.

Within the fortress is the cave, the home of the self.

ਨਉ ਘਰ ਥਾਪੇ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ॥

Na▫o gʱar ṫʱaapé hukam rajaa▫ee.

He established the nine gates of this house, by His Command and His Will.

ਦਸਵੈ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਅਪਾਰੀ ਆਪੇ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥

Ḏasvæ purakʱ alékʱ apaaree aapé alakʱ lakʱaa▫iḋaa. ||3||

In the Tenth Gate, the Primal Lord, the unknowable and infinite dwells; the unseen Lord reveals Himself. ||3||

ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਇਕ ਵਾਸਾ ॥

Pa▫uṇ paaṇee agnee ik vaasaa.

Within the body of air, water and fire, the One Lord dwells.

ਆਪੇ ਕੀਤੋ ਖੇਲੁ ਤਮਾਸਾ ॥

Āpé keeṫo kʱél ṫamaasaa.

He Himself stages His wondrous dramas and plays.

ਬਲਦੀ ਜਲਿ ਨਿਵਰੈ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਆਪੇ ਜਲ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥

Balḋee jal nivræ kirpaa ṫé aapé jal niḋʱ paa▫iḋaa. ||4||

By His Grace, water puts out the burning fire; He Himself stores it up in the watery ocean. ||4||

ਧਰਤਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਧਰੀ ਧਰਮ ਸਾਲਾ ॥

Ḋʱaraṫ upaa▫é ḋʱaree ḋʱaram saalaa.

Creating the earth, He established it as the home of Dharma.

ਉਤਪਤਿ ਪਰਲਉ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥

Uṫpaṫ parla▫o aap niraalaa.

Creating and destroying, He remains unattached.

ਪਵਣੈ ਖੇਲੁ ਕੀਆ ਸਭ ਥਾਈ ਕਲਾ ਖਿੰਚਿ ਢਾਹਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥

Pavṇæ kʱél kee▫aa sabʱ ṫʱaa▫ee kalaa kʱinch dʱaahaa▫iḋaa. ||5||

He stages the play of the breath everywhere. Withdrawing His power, He lets the beings crumble. ||5||

ਭਾਰ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਮਾਲਣਿ ਤੇਰੀ ॥

Bʱaar atʱaarah maalaṇ ṫéree.

Your gardener is the vast vegetation of nature.

ਚਉਰੁ ਢੁਲੈ ਪਵਣੈ ਲੈ ਫੇਰੀ ॥

Cha▫ur dʱulæ pavṇæ læ féree.

The wind blowing around is the Chauree, the fly-brush, waving over You.

ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਦੁਇ ਦੀਪਕ ਰਾਖੇ ਸਸਿ ਘਰਿ ਸੂਰੁ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੬॥

Chanḋ sooraj ḋu▫é ḋeepak raakʱé sas gʱar soor samaa▫iḋaa. ||6||

The Lord placed the two lamps, the sun and the moon; the sun merges in the house of the moon. ||6||

ਪੰਖੀ ਪੰਚ ਉਡਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥

Pankʱee panch udar nahee ḋʱaavėh.

The five birds do not fly wild.

ਸਫਲਿਓ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥

Safli▫o birakʱ amriṫ fal paavahi.

The tree of life is fruitful, bearing the fruit of Ambrosial Nectar.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਰਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚੋਗ ਚੁਗਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥

Gurmukʱ sahj ravæ guṇ gaavæ har ras chog chugaa▫iḋaa. ||7||

The Gurmukh intuitively sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord; he eats the food of the Lord’s sublime essence. ||7||

ਝਿਲਮਿਲਿ ਝਿਲਕੈ ਚੰਦੁ ਨ ਤਾਰਾ ॥

Jʱilmil jʱilkæ chanḋ na ṫaaraa.

The dazzling light glitters, although neither the moon nor the stars are shining;

ਸੂਰਜ ਕਿਰਣਿ ਨ ਬਿਜੁਲਿ ਗੈਣਾਰਾ ॥

Sooraj kiraṇ na bijul gʱæṇaaraa.

neither the sun’s rays nor the lightning flashes across the sky.

ਅਕਥੀ ਕਥਉ ਚਿਹਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥

Akṫʱee kaṫʱa▫o chihan nahee ko▫ee poor rahi▫aa man bʱaa▫iḋaa. ||8||

I describe the indescribable state, which has no sign, where the all-pervading Lord is still pleasing to the mind. ||8||

ਪਸਰੀ ਕਿਰਣਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਉਜਿਆਲਾ ॥

Pasree kiraṇ joṫ uji▫aalaa.

The rays of Divine Light have spread out their brilliant radiance.

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥

Kar kar ḋékʱæ aap ḋa▫i▫aalaa.

Having created the creation, the Merciful Lord Himself gazes upon it.

ਅਨਹਦ ਰੁਣ ਝੁਣਕਾਰੁ ਸਦਾ ਧੁਨਿ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਇਦਾ ॥੯॥

Anhaḋ ruṇ jʱuṇkaar saḋaa ḋʱun nirbʱa▫o kæ gʱar vaa▫iḋaa. ||9||

The sweet, melodious, unstruck sound current vibrates continuously in the home of the fearless Lord. ||9||

ਅਨਹਦੁ ਵਾਜੈ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਭਾਜੈ ॥

Anhaḋ vaajæ bʱaram bʱa▫o bʱaajæ.

When the unstruck sound current resounds, doubt and fear run away.
