644 ਧੰਧਾ ਕਰਤਿਆ ਨਿਹਫਲੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਨ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥ Ḋʰanḋʰaa karṫi▫aa nihfal janam gavaa▫i▫aa sukʰ▫ḋaaṫa man na vasaa▫i▫aa. Involved in worldly affairs, he wastes his life in vain; the peace-giving Lord does not come to abide in his mind. ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਕਉ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ Naanak naam ṫinaa ka▫o mili▫aa jin ka▫o ḋʰur likʰ paa▫i▫aa. ||1|| O Nanak! They alone obtain the Name, who have such preordained destiny. ||1|| ਮਃ ੩ ॥ Mėhlaa 3. Third Mehl: ਘਰ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਭਰਪੂਰੁ ਹੈ ਮਨਮੁਖਾ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ Gʰar hee mėh amriṫ bʰarpoor hæ manmukʰaa saaḋ na paa▫i▫aa. The home within is filled with Ambrosial Nectar, but the self-willed Manmukh does not get to taste it. ਜਿਉ ਕਸਤੂਰੀ ਮਿਰਗੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਭ੍ਰਮਦਾ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ॥ Ji▫o kasṫooree mirag na jaaṇæ bʰarmaḋaa bʰaram bʰulaa▫i▫aa. He is like the deer, who does not recognize its own musk-scent; it wanders around, deluded by doubt. ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤਜਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹੈ ਕਰਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਇਆ ॥ Amriṫ ṫaj bikʰ sangrahæ karṫæ aap kʰu▫aa▫i▫aa. The Manmukh forsakes the Ambrosial Nectar, and instead gathers poison; the Creator Himself has fooled him. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਈ ਤਿਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥ Gurmukʰ virlé sojʰee pa▫ee ṫinaa anḋar barahm ḋikʰaa▫i▫aa. How rare are the Gurmukhs, who obtain this understanding; they behold the Lord God within themselves. ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਦੁ ਆਇਆ ॥ Ṫan man seeṫal ho▫i▫aa rasnaa har saaḋ aa▫i▫aa. Their minds and bodies are cooled and soothed, and their tongues enjoy the sublime taste of the Lord. ਸਬਦੇ ਹੀ ਨਾਉ ਊਪਜੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥ Sabḋé hee naa▫o oopjæ sabḋé mél milaa▫i▫aa. Through the Word of the Shabad, the Name wells up; through the Shabad, we are united in the Lord’s Union. ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਬਉਰਾਨਾ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥ Bin sabḋæ sabʰ jag ba▫uraanaa birṫʰaa janam gavaa▫i▫aa. Without the Shabad, the whole world is insane, and it loses its life in vain. ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਏਕੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ Amriṫ éko sabaḋ hæ Naanak gurmukʰ paa▫i▫aa. ||2|| The Shabad alone is Ambrosial Nectar; O Nanak! The Gurmukhs obtain it. ||2|| ਪਉੜੀ ॥ Pa▫oṛee. Pauree: ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਹੈ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ So har purakʰ agamm hæ kaho kiṫ biḋʰ paa▫ee▫æ. The Lord God is inaccessible; tell me, how can we find Him? ਤਿਸੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੁ ਕਹੁ ਜਨ ਕਿਉ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥ Ṫis roop na rékʰ aḋrist kaho jan ki▫o ḋʰi▫aa▫ee▫æ. He has no form or feature, and He cannot be seen; tell me, how can we meditate on Him? ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਈਐ ॥ Nirankaar niranjan har agam ki▫aa kahi guṇ gaa▫ee▫æ. The Lord is formless, immaculate and inaccessible; which of His Virtues should we speak of and sing? ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਆਪਿ ਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ Jis aap bujʰaa▫é aap so har maarag paa▫ee▫æ. They alone walk on the Lord’s Path, whom the Lord Himself instructs. ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਵੇਖਾਲਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੪॥ Gur pooræ vékʰaali▫aa gur sévaa paa▫ee▫æ. ||4|| The Perfect Guru has revealed Him to me; serving the Guru, He is found. ||4|| ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੩ ॥ Salok mėhlaa 3. Shalok, Third Mehl: ਜਿਉ ਤਨੁ ਕੋਲੂ ਪੀੜੀਐ ਰਤੁ ਨ ਭੋਰੀ ਡੇਹਿ ॥ Ji▫o ṫan koloo peeṛee▫æ raṫ na bʰoree ḋéhi. It is as if my body has been crushed in the oil-press, without yielding even a drop of blood; ਜੀਉ ਵੰਞੈ ਚਉ ਖੰਨੀਐ ਸਚੇ ਸੰਦੜੈ ਨੇਹਿ ॥ Jee▫o vañæ cha▫o kʰannee▫æ saché sanḋ▫ṛæ néhi. it is as if my soul has been cut apart into pieces for the sake of the Love of the True Lord; ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਲੁ ਨ ਚੁਕਈ ਰਾਤੀ ਅਤੈ ਡੇਹ ॥੧॥ Naanak mél na chuk▫ee raaṫee aṫæ déh. ||1|| O Nanak! Still, night and day, my Union with the Lord is not broken. ||1|| ਮਃ ੩ ॥ Mėhlaa 3. Third Mehl: ਸਜਣੁ ਮੈਡਾ ਰੰਗੁਲਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਏ ਮਨੁ ਲੇਇ ॥ Sajaṇ mædaa rangulaa rang laa▫é man lé▫é. My Friend is so full of joy and love; He colors my mind with the color of His Love, ਜਿਉ ਮਾਜੀਠੈ ਕਪੜੇ ਰੰਗੇ ਭੀ ਪਾਹੇਹਿ ॥ Ji▫o maajeetʰæ kapṛé rangé bʰee paahéhi. like the fabric which is treated to retain the color of the dye. ਨਾਨਕ ਰੰਗੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਬਿਆ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਕੇਹ ॥੨॥ Naanak rang na uṫræ bi▫aa na lagæ kéh. ||2|| O Nanak! This color does not depart, and no other color can be imparted to this fabric. ||2|| ਪਉੜੀ ॥ Pa▫oṛee. Pauree: ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਲਾਇਦਾ ॥ Har aap varṫæ aap har aap bulaa▫iḋaa. The Lord Himself is pervading everywhere; the Lord Himself causes us to chant His Name. ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਇਦਾ ॥ Har aapé sarisat savaar sir ḋʰanḋʰæ laa▫iḋaa. The Lord Himself created the creation; He commits all to their tasks. ਇਕਨਾ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਾਇ ਇਕਿ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਇਦਾ ॥ Iknaa bʰagṫee laa▫é ik aap kʰu▫aa▫iḋaa. He engages some in devotional worship, and to others, He causes them to stray. ਇਕਨਾ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਇ ਇਕਿ ਉਝੜਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥ Iknaa maarag paa▫é ik ujʰaṛ paa▫iḋaa. He places some on the Path, while He leads others into the wilderness. ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥ Jan Naanak naam ḋʰi▫aa▫é gurmukʰ guṇ gaa▫iḋaa. ||5|| Servant Nanak meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord; as Gurmukh, he sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5|| ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੩ ॥ Salok mėhlaa 3. Shalok, Third Mehl: ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸਫਲੁ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਕਰੇ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥ Saṫgur kee sévaa safal hæ jé ko karé chiṫ laa▫é. Service to the True Guru is fruitful and rewarding, if one performs it with his mind focused on it. ਮਨਿ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਣਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ Man chinḋi▫aa fal paavṇaa ha▫umæ vichahu jaa▫é. The fruits of the mind’s desires are obtained, and egotism departs from within. ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋੜੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਸਚੇ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ Banḋʰan ṫoṛæ mukaṫ ho▫é saché rahæ samaa▫é. His bonds are broken, and he is liberated; he remains absorbed in the True Lord. ਇਸੁ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਲਭੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥ Is jag mėh naam alabʰ hæ gurmukʰ vasæ man aa▫é. It is so difficult to obtain the Naam in this world; it comes to dwell in the mind of the Gurmukh. ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥ Naanak jo gur sévėh aapṇaa ha▫o ṫin balihaaræ jaa▫o. ||1|| O Nanak! I am a sacrifice to one who serves his True Guru. ||1|| ਮਃ ੩ ॥ Mėhlaa 3. Third Mehl: ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੰਨੁ ਅਜਿਤੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਗੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ Manmukʰ man ajiṫ hæ ḋoojæ lagæ jaa▫é. The mind of the self-willed Manmukh is so very stubborn; it is stuck in the love of duality. ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਨਹੀ ਦੁਖੇ ਦੁਖਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥ Ṫis no sukʰ supnæ nahee ḋukʰé ḋukʰ vihaa▫é. He does not find peace, even in dreams; he passes his life in misery and suffering. ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਥਕੇ ਸਿਧ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਲਗਾਇ ॥ Gʰar gʰar paṛ paṛ pandiṫ ṫʰaké siḋʰ samaaḋʰ lagaa▫é. The Pandits have grown weary of going door to door, reading and reciting their scriptures; the Siddhas have gone into their trances of Samadhi. ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਵਸਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਥਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ Ih man vas na aavee ṫʰaké karam kamaa▫é. This mind cannot be controlled; they are tired of performing religious rituals. ਭੇਖਧਾਰੀ ਭੇਖ ਕਰਿ ਥਕੇ ਅਠਿਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਇ ॥ Bʰékʰ▫ḋʰaaree bʰékʰ kar ṫʰaké atʰisatʰ ṫiraṫʰ naa▫é. The impersonators have grown weary of wearing false costumes, and bathing at the sixty-eight sacred shrines. |
