raatee kaal ghatai din kaal.
Through the night the time ticks away; through the day the time ticks away.

iCjY kwieAw hoie prwlu ] (1287-1)
chhijai kaa-i-aa ho-ay paraal.
The body wears away and turns to straw.

vrqix vriqAw srb jMjwlu ] (1287-2)
vartan varti-aa sarab janjaal.
All are involved and entangled in worldly entanglements.

BuilAw cuik gieAw qp qwlu ] (1287-2)
bhuli-aa chuk ga-i-aa tap taal.
The mortal has mistakenly renounced the way of service.

AMDw JiK JiK pieAw Jyir ] (1287-2)
anDhaa jhakh jhakh pa-i-aa jhayr.
The blind fool is caught in conflict, bothered and bewildered.

ipCY rovih ilAwvih Pyir ] (1287-3)
pichhai roveh li-aaveh fayr.
Those who weep after someone has died - can they bring him back to life?

ibnu bUJy ikCu sUJY nwhI ] (1287-3)
bin boojhay kichh soojhai naahee.
Without realization, nothing can be understood.

moieAw roNih roNdy mir jWhˆØI ] (1287-3)
mo-i-aa ro^Nhi ro^Nday mar jaa^Nhee^N.
The weepers who weep for the dead shall themselves die as well.

naanak khasmai ayvai bhaavai.
O Nanak, this is the Will of our Lord and Master.

syeI muey ijin iciq n AwvY ]1] (1287-4)
say-ee mu-ay jin chit na aavai. ||1||
Those who do not remember the Lord, are dead. ||1||

muAw ipAwru pRIiq mueI muAw vYru vwdI ] (1287-4)
mu-aa pi-aar pareet mu-ee mu-aa vair vaadee.
Love dies, and affection dies; hatred and strife die.

vMnu gieAw rUpu ivxisAw duKI dyh rulI ] (1287-5)
vann ga-i-aa roop vinsi-aa dukhee dayh rulee.
The color fades, and beauty vanishes; the body suffers and collapses.

ikQhu AwieAw kh gieAw ikhu n sIE ikhu sI ] (1287-5)
kithhu aa-i-aa kah ga-i-aa kihu na see-o kihu see.
Where did he come from? Where is he going? Did he exist or not?

min muiK glw goeIAw kIqw cwau rlI ] (1287-6)
man mukh galaa go-ee-aa keetaa chaa-o ralee.
The self-willed manmukh made empty boasts, indulging in parties and pleasures.

naanak sachay naam bin sir khur pat paatee. ||2||
O Nanak, without the True Name, his honor is torn away, from head to foot. ||2||

AMimRq nwmu sdw suKdwqw AMqy hoie sKweI ] (1287-7)
amrit naam sadaa sukh-daata antay ho-ay sakhaa-ee.
The Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord, is forever the Giver of peace. It shall be your Help and Support in the end.

bwJu gurU jgqu baurwnw nwvY swr n pweI ] (1287-7)
baajh guroo jagat ba-uraanaa naavai saar na paa-ee.
Without the Guru, the world is insane. It does not appreciate the worth of the Name.

siqguru syvih sy prvwxu ijn@ joqI joiq imlweI ] (1287-8)
satgur sayveh say parvaan jin^H jotee jot milaa-ee.
Those who serve the True Guru are accepted and approved. Their light merges into the Light.

so swihbu so syvku qyhw ijsu Bwxw mMin vsweI ] (1287-8)
so saahib so sayvak tayhaa jis bhaanaa man vasaa-ee.
That servant who enshrines the Lord's Will within his mind, becomes just like his Lord and Master.

AwpxY BwxY khu ikin suKu pwieAw AMDw AMDu kmweI ] (1287-9)
aapnai bhaanai kaho kin sukh paa-i-aa anDhaa anDh kamaa-ee.
Tell me, who has ever found peace by following his own will? The blind act in blindness.

ibiKAw kdy hI rjY nwhI mUrK BuK n jweI ] (1287-9)
bikhi-aa kaday hee rajai naahee moorakh bhukh na jaa-ee.
No one is ever satisfied and fulfilled by evil and corruption. The hunger of the fool is not satisfied.

dUjY sBu ko lig ivguqw ibnu siqgur bUJ n pweI ] (1287-10)
doojai sabh ko lag vigutaa bin satgur boojh na paa-ee.
Attached to duality, all are ruined; without the True Guru, there is no understanding.

siqguru syvy so suKu pwey ijs no ikrpw kry rjweI ]20] (1287-10)
satgur sayvay so sukh paa-ay jis no kirpaa karay rajaa-ee. ||20||
Those who serve the True Guru find peace; they are blessed with Grace by the Will of the Lord. ||20||

srmu Drmu duie nwnkw jy Dnu plY pwie ] (1287-11)
saram Dharam du-ay naankaa jay Dhan palai paa-ay.
Modesty and righteousness both, O Nanak, are qualities of those who are blessed with true wealth.

so Dnu imqRü n kWFIAY ijqu isir cotW Kwie ] (1287-11)
so Dhan mitar na kaa^Ndhee-ai jit sir chotaa^N khaa-ay.
Do not refer to that wealth as your friend, which leads you to get your head beaten.

jin kai palai Dhan vasai tin kaa naa-o fakeer.
Those who possess only this worldly wealth are known as paupers.

ijn@ kY ihrdY qU vsih qy nr guxI ghIr ]1] (1287-12)
jin^H kai hirdai too vaseh tay nar gunee gaheer. ||1||
But those, within whose hearts You dwell, O Lord - those people are oceans of virtue. ||1||

duKI dunI shyVIAY jwie q lgih duK ] (1287-13)
dukhee dunee sahayrhee-ai jaa-ay ta lageh dukh.
Worldly possessions are obtained by pain and suffering; when they are gone, they leave pain and suffering.

naanak sachay naam bin kisai na lathee bhukh.
O Nanak, without the True Name, hunger is never satisfied.

rUpI BuK n auqrY jW dyKW qW BuK ] (1287-14)
roopee bhukh na utrai jaa^N daykhaa^N taa^N bhukh.
Beauty does not satisfy hunger; when the man sees beauty, he hungers even more.

jyqy rs srIr ky qyqy lgih duK ]2] (1287-14)
jaytay ras sareer kay taytay lageh dukh. ||2||
As many as are the pleasures of the body, so many are the pains which afflict it. ||2||

AMDI kMmI AMDu mnu min AMDY qnu AMDu ] (1287-14)
anDhee kammee anDh man man anDhai tan anDh.
Acting blindly, the mind becomes blind. The blind mind makes the body blind.

ickiV lwieAY ikAw QIAY jW qutY pQr bMDu ] (1287-15)
chikarh laa-i-ai ki-aa thee-ai jaa^N tutai pathar banDh.
Why make a dam with mud and plaster? Even a dam made of stones gives way.

bMDu qutw byVI nhI nw qulhw nw hwQ ] (1287-15)
banDh tutaa bayrhee nahee naa tulhaa naa haath.
The dam has burst. There is no boat. There is no raft. The water's depth is unfathomable.

nwnk scy nwm ivxu kyqy fuby swQ ]3] (1287-16)
naanak sachay naam vin kaytay dubay saath. ||3||
O Nanak, without the True Name, many multitudes have drowned. ||3||

lakh man su-inaa lakh man rupaa lakh saahaa sir saah.
Thousands of pounds of gold, and thousands of pounds of silver; the king over the heads of thousands of kings.

lK lskr lK vwjy nyjy lKI GoVI pwiqswh ] (1287-17)
lakh laskar lakh vaajay nayjay lakhee ghorhee paatisaah.
Thousands of armies, thousands of marching bands and spearmen; the emperor of thousands of horsemen.

ijQY swieru lµGxw Agin pwxI Asgwh ] (1287-17)
jithai saa-ir langh-naa agan paanee asgaah.
The unfathomable ocean of fire and water must be crossed.

kMDI idis n AwveI DwhI pvY khwh ] (1287-18)
kanDhee dis na aavee Dhaahee pavai kahaah.
The other shore cannot be seen; only the roar of pitiful cries can be heard.

nwnk EQY jwxIAih swh kyeI pwiqswh ]4] (1287-18)
naanak othai jaanee-ahi saah kay-ee paatisaah. ||4||
O Nanak, there, it shall be known, whether anyone is a king or an emperor. ||4||

pa-orhee.
Pauree:

ieknw glIN jMjIr bMid rbwxIAY ] (1287-19)
iknaa galee^N janjeer band rabaanee-ai.
Some have chains around their necks, in bondage to the Lord.

bDy Cutih sic scu pCwxIAY ] (1287-19)
baDhay chhuteh sach sach pachhaanee-ai.
They are released from bondage, realizing the True Lord as True.
