ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਭਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Saach sabaḋ bin kabahu na chʰootas birṫʰaa janam bʰa▫i▫o. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

Without the True Word of the Shabad, you shall never be released, and your life shall be totally useless. ||1||Pause||

ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਹਉ ਮਮਤਾ ਕਠਿਨ ਪੀਰ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਰੀ ॥

Ṫan mėh kaam kroḋʰ ha▫o mamṫaa katʰin peer aṫ bʰaaree.

Within the body are sexual desire, anger, egotism and attachment. This pain is so great, and so difficult to endure.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਜਪਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਤਰੁ ਤੂ ਤਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

Gurmukʰ raam japahu ras rasnaa in biḋʰ ṫar ṫoo ṫaaree. ||2||

As Gurmukh, chant the Lord’s Name, and savor it with your tongue; in this way, you shall cross over to the other side. ||2||

ਬਹਰੇ ਕਰਨ ਅਕਲਿ ਭਈ ਹੋਛੀ ਸਬਦ ਸਹਜੁ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝਿਆ ॥

Bahré karan akal bʰa▫ee hochʰee sabaḋ sahj nahee boojʰi▫aa.

Your ears are deaf, and your intellect is worthless, and still, you do not intuitively understand the Word of the Shabad.

ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਹਾਰਿਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਸੂਝਿਆ ॥੩॥

Janam paḋaaraṫʰ manmukʰ haari▫aa bin gur anḋʰ na soojʰi▫aa. ||3||

The self-willed Manmukh wastes this priceless human life and loses it. Without the Guru, the blind person cannot see. ||3||

ਰਹੈ ਉਦਾਸੁ ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ਸਹਜ ਧਿਆਨਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥

Rahæ uḋaas aas niraasaa sahj ḋʰi▫aan bæraagee.

Whoever remains detached and free of desire in the midst of desire - and whoever, unattached, intuitively meditates on the Celestial Lord-

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥੪॥੨॥੩॥

Paraṇvaṫ Naanak gurmukʰ chʰootas raam naam liv laagee. ||4||2||3||

prays Nanak, as Gurmukh, he is released. He is lovingly attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||||2||3||

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Bʰæro mėhlaa 1.

Bhairao, First Mehl:

ਭੂੰਡੀ ਚਾਲ ਚਰਣ ਕਰ ਖਿਸਰੇ ਤੁਚਾ ਦੇਹ ਕੁਮਲਾਨੀ ॥

Bʰooⁿdee chaal charaṇ kar kʰisré ṫuchaa ḋéh kumlaanee.

His walk becomes weak and clumsy, his feet and hands shake, and the skin of his body is withered and wrinkled.

ਨੇਤ੍ਰੀ ਧੁੰਧਿ ਕਰਨ ਭਏ ਬਹਰੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨੀ ॥੧॥

Néṫree ḋʰunḋʰ karan bʰa▫é bahré manmukʰ naam na jaanee. ||1||

His eyes are dim, his ears are deaf, and yet, the self-willed Manmukh does not know the Naam. ||1||

ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਗਿ ਆਇ ॥

Anḋʰulé ki▫aa paa▫i▫aa jag aa▫é.

O blind man, what have you obtained by coming into the world?

ਰਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਨਹੀ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਚਾਲੇ ਮੂਲੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Raam riḋæ nahee gur kee sévaa chaalé mool gavaa▫é. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

The Lord is not in your heart, and you do not serve the Guru. After wasting your capital, you shall have to depart. ||1||Pause||

ਜਿਹਵਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਨਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਜਬ ਬੋਲੈ ਤਬ ਫੀਕੇ ॥

Jihvaa rang nahee har raaṫee jab bolæ ṫab feeké.

Your tongue is not imbued with the Love of the Lord; whatever you say is tasteless and insipid.

ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਵਿਆਪਸਿ ਪਸੂ ਭਏ ਕਦੇ ਹੋਹਿ ਨ ਨੀਕੇ ॥੨॥

Sanṫ janaa kee ninḋaa vi▫aapas pasoo bʰa▫é kaḋé hohi na neeké. ||2||

You indulge in slander of the Saints; becoming a beast, you shall never be noble. ||2||

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਾ ਰਸੁ ਵਿਰਲੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥

Amriṫ kaa ras virlee paa▫i▫aa saṫgur mél milaa▫é.

Only a few obtain the sublime essence of the Ambrosial Amrit, united in Union with the True Guru.

ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਸਬਦ ਭੇਦੁ ਨਹੀ ਆਇਆ ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਏ ॥੩॥

Jab lag sabaḋ bʰéḋ nahee aa▫i▫aa ṫab lag kaal sanṫaa▫é. ||3||

As long as the mortal does not come to understand the mystery of the Shabad, the Word of God, he shall continue to be tormented by death. ||3||

ਅਨ ਕੋ ਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਏਕੋ ਦਰੁ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ॥

An ko ḋar gʰar kabhoo na jaanas éko ḋar sachi▫aaraa.

Whoever finds the door of the One True Lord, does not know any other house or door.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੩॥੪॥

Gur parsaaḋ param paḋ paa▫i▫aa Naanak kahæ vichaaraa. ||4||3||4||

By Guru’s Grace, I have obtained the supreme-status; so says poor Nanak. ||4||3||4||

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Bhairao, First Mehl:

ਸਗਲੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਸੋਵਤ ਗਲਿ ਫਾਹੀ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਜੰਜਾਲਿ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥

Saglee ræṇ sovaṫ gal faahee ḋinas janjaal gavaa▫i▫aa.

He spends the entire night in sleep; the noose is tied around his neck. His day is wasted in worldly entanglements.

ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਘੜੀ ਨਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

Kʰin pal gʰaṛee nahee parabʰ jaani▫aa jin ih jagaṫ upaa▫i▫aa. ||1||

He does not know God, who created this world, for a moment, for even an instant. ||1||

ਮਨ ਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਰੀ ॥

Man ré ki▫o chʰootas ḋukʰ bʰaaree.

O mortal, how will you escape this terrible disaster?

ਕਿਆ ਲੇ ਆਵਸਿ ਕਿਆ ਲੇ ਜਾਵਸਿ ਰਾਮ ਜਪਹੁ ਗੁਣਕਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Ki▫aa lé aavas ki▫aa lé jaavas raam japahu guṇkaaree. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

What did you bring with you, and what will you take away? Meditate on the Lord, the Most Worthy and Generous Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਊਂਧਉ ਕਵਲੁ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮਤਿ ਹੋਛੀ ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਧੰਧਾ ॥

Ooⁿḋʰa▫o kaval manmukʰ maṫ hochʰee man anḋʰæ sir ḋʰanḋʰaa.

The heart-lotus of the self-willed Manmukh is upside-down; his intellect is shallow; his mind is blind, and his head is entangled in worldly affairs.

ਕਾਲੁ ਬਿਕਾਲੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਗਲਿ ਫੰਧਾ ॥੨॥

Kaal bikaal saḋaa sir ṫéræ bin naavæ gal fanḋʰaa. ||2||

Death and rebirth constantly hang over your head; without the Name, your neck shall be caught in the noose. ||2||

ਡਗਰੀ ਚਾਲ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਫੁਨਿ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਈ ॥

Dagree chaal néṫar fun anḋʰulé sabaḋ suraṫ nahee bʰaa▫ee.

Your steps are unsteady, and your eyes are blind; you are not aware of the Word of the Shabad, O Sibling of Destiny.

ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਅੰਧੁਲਉ ਧੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਈ ॥੩॥

Saasṫar béḋ ṫaræ guṇ hæ maa▫i▫aa anḋʰula▫o ḋʰanḋʰ kamaa▫ee. ||3||

The Shastras and the Vedas keep the mortal bound to the three modes of Maya, and so he performs his deeds blindly. ||3||

ਖੋਇਓ ਮੂਲੁ ਲਾਭੁ ਕਹ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਹੂਣੇ ॥

Kʰo▫i▫o mool laabʰ kah paavas ḋurmaṫ gi▫aan vihooṇé.

He loses his capital - how can he earn any profit? The evil-minded person has no spiritual wisdom at all.

ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਿ ਪਤੀਣੇ ॥੪॥੪॥੫॥

Sabaḋ beechaar raam ras chaakʰi▫aa Naanak saach paṫeeṇé. ||4||4||5||

Contemplating the Shabad, he drinks in the sublime essence of the Lord; O Nanak! His faith is confirmed in the Truth. ||4||4||5||

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Bhairao, First Mehl:

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਹੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਸਨਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ॥

Gur kæ sang rahæ ḋin raaṫee raam rasan rang raaṫaa.

He remains with the Guru, day and night, and his tongue savors the savory taste of the Lord’s Love.

ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਸਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣਸਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਣਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥੧॥

Avar na jaaṇas sabaḋ pachʰaaṇas anṫar jaaṇ pachʰaaṫaa. ||1||

He does not know any other; he realizes the Word of the Shabad. He knows and realizes the Lord deep within his own being. ||1||

ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਐਸਾ ਮੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

So jan æsaa mæ man bʰaavæ.

Such a humble person is pleasing to my mind.

ਆਪੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਅਪਰੰਪਰਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Aap maar aprampar raaṫaa gur kee kaar kamaavæ. ||1|| rahaa▫o.

He conquers his self-conceit, and is imbued with the Infinite Lord. He serves the Guru. ||1||Pause||

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਆਦੇਸੋ ॥

Anṫar baahar purakʰ niranjan aaḋ purakʰ aaḋéso.

Deep within my being, and outside as well, is the Immaculate Lord God. I bow humbly before that Primal Lord God.

ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਵੇਸੋ ॥੨॥

Gʰat gʰat anṫar sarab niranṫar rav rahi▫aa sach véso. ||2||

Deep within each and every heart, and amidst all, the Embodiment of Truth is permeating and pervading. ||2||
